George Harrison- BRAINWASHED- CD- 2002- Umlaut Corporation/EMI Records Limited- 724354196928- 400 grn
BRAINWASHED is the twelfth and final studio album by English rock musician George Harrison. It was released posthumously on 19th November 2002, almost a year after his death at age 58, and 15 years after his previous studio album, Cloud Nine. Recordings began over a decade before Harrison's death but were repeatedly delayed. The album's overdubs were completed by his son Dhani, session drummer Jim Keltner, and longtime friend and collaborator Jeff Lynne. A live tribute to Harrison by an assembly of his musical contemporaries, titled Concert For George, took place at London's Royal Albert Hall simultaneously with the release of the album. BRAINWASHED is a warm, frank goodbye, a remarkably poised record about the reality of dying, by a man on the verge. BRAINWASHED suggests that Harrison's last years were largely comfortable, slow-paced and unaffected by any worries about his relevance. A mature and often profound record. Beautifully fatalistic and unimposingly pedagogical, BRAINWASHED is quite possibly Harrison's next-to-best album and a sober reminder that his passing is a loss too large to measure. Harrison never seemed to recognize the difference between philosophical profundities and the sound of a catchy song, and that may have been his greatest gift to the world. BRAINWASHED offers a fine, final reminder of that gift.

George Harrison went quiet not long after the second Traveling Wilburys album, surfacing only for the Beatles' Anthology in the mid-'90s. He was recording all the while, yet he died before completing the album that would have been the follow-up to 1987's Cloud Nine. His son, Dhani, and his longtime friend/collaborator Jeff Lynne completed the recordings, released late in 2002, nearly a year after George's death, as BRAINWASHED. Defying all odds, BRAINWASHED isn't just a success, it's one of the finest records Harrison ever made. It's intimate, alternately insightful and cheerfully lightweight, balancing his trademark black humor with silliness and good humor. Anyone searching the album for his views on mortality will surely find it, but this is not a somber album, it is a warm album, the sound of someone enjoying life without losing his wry sense of humor. There aren't any major songs here, but there are no down moments and it all holds together well and it's a fitting way to say goodbye, every bit as good as Double Fantasy and, in some respects, even sweeter. BRAINWASHED is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the album's spiritual benediction, a touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever.
