MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK is a live album of selected performances from the 1969 Woodstock counterculture festival officially known as "The Woodstock Music & Art Fair". Originally released on Atlantic Records' Cotillion label as a triple album on 11th May 1970 it was re-released as a 4 CD box, along with WOODSTOCK TWO, by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs in 1986. MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK was certified Gold on 22nd May 1970, and Twice Platinum in 1993. A second collection of recordings from the festival, WOODSTOCK TWO, was released a year later. WOODSTOCK TWO is the second live album released of the 1969 Woodstock Festival concert. The set contains more material from many acts featured on the first WOODSTOCK album with additional performances from Mountain and Melanie. The tracks by Mountain were in fact not from their Woodstock performance but rather a show recorded at New York's Fillmore East. WOODSTOCK TWO was originally released in March 1971 as a double LP set. It was certified Gold in the US on 1st April 1971. It peaked at No. 7 on the chart during the week of 7th May 1971. In 1994, the songs from both albums, as well as numerous additional, previously unreleased performances from the festival were reissued by Atlantic as a four-CD box set titled Woodstock: Three Days Of Peace And Music. In 2009, Rhino Records issued a six-CD box set, Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back To Yasgur's Farm, which includes further musical performances as well as stage announcements and other ancillary material. Rhino Records also reissued a remastered version of the MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK and WOODSTOCK TWO on original double CD album in 2009. In 2014, MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. It's almost impossible to regard the soundtrack albums for the documentary WOODSTOCK, simply as music, apart from the event that inspired them or what that event has come to represent. MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK topped the charts for four weeks and sold two million copies. It sold so well that Cotillion issued a sequel double album WOODSTOCK TWO of more music from the festival that never appeared in the film. Rhino's 2009 remastered edition of this set on a double CD is the cleanest edition yet, but even it has problems: the source tapes were problematic at best. It restores the original LP order, features new liners, and has more photos in the booklets. After the multi-platinum success of MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK that accompanied documentary film Woodstock, WOODSTOCK TWO was inevitable as a sequel. If anything, this set, more concise and more focused, is a better bet than its predecessor. The Rhino edition of WOODSTOCK TWO contains new liner notes, new photos, and completely remastered sound that's a grand improvement on any CD edition released thus far. So as it stands, WOODSTOCK is a wildly mixed bag, but it does indeed have a significant place in the rock pantheon and should be regarded more as an artifact than as an album in its own right.
