FREEDOM: ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix, released on 28th August 2015. It documents his, performance at the Atlanta International Pop Festival on 4th July 1970. The festival's audience, subject to a wide range of estimates from 200,000-400,000, was the largest U.S. crowd to which Hendrix played during his career. Atlanta may have a less iconic status than Woodstock and the Isle Of Wight but, as this double CD release shows, Seattle's favourite son was nonetheless on fire at this happy hippie bonanza. With a Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass – Hendrix runs through the repertoire that largely made him rock's most soulful modernist. It is the way the music stretches the blues modelling clay whence it was born into stridently jazzy territory and an undefined space in between that makes it so compelling. The trio had been touring for about two and a half months solid when July 4 rolled around, and they sound really tight kicking off the show. Jimi is just in amazing form as the ideas just keep coming. The entire solo is so well constructed it could almost be composed. A tantalising look back at a future that sadly never came to pass.
PERSONNEL: Jimi Hendrix – guitar, vocals; Billy Cox – bass guitar, backing vocals; Mitch Mitchell – drums.
Just when you thought you was done buying Jimi Hendrix albums… he pulls you back in. Enter FREEDOM: ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL. Much like the documentary that it sprang from, you'll be truly blown away by this show. Instead of the all new songs like Band Of Gypsies, this is Hendrix playing the songs you was familiar with. It was just one epic performance. The opening salvo of ''Fire'', ''Lover Man'', and ''Spanish Castle Magic'' is just amazing. Hendrix is coaxing sounds out of his guitar that neither you had ever heard before. Its simply mesmerizing. The show ends with the obligatory ''Star Spangled Banner'', this time with actual fireworks going off in the background, see Electric Church, it’s pretty amazing imagery, which leads into a new song, Straight Ahead. After it’s over you’re left simply in awe of what The Experience could do on a steamy 4th of July in Georgia. The music on FREEDOM: ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL has been available in collector's circles for some time, but it has never sounded better than it does here. Despite a brief lull mid-set, the revamped Experience turned in an exciting show on 4th July 1970, and with "Hear My Train A Comin'", Jimi turned in one of the greatest solos of his career. Do yourself a favor and pick this gem up quickly. Turn it up loud and, as always, enjoy! Cheers!
