MIAMI POP FESTIVAL is a posthumous live album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, documenting their 18th May 1968 performance at the Pop & Underground Festival in Hallandale, Florida. It features eight songs recorded during their evening performance, along with two extra songs. The album was released on 5th November 2013, in conjunction with the Jimi Hendrix video documentary, Hear My Train A Comin'. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had been the breakthrough act that wowed audiences at Monterey and persuaded Hendrix to headline the Miami event. Jimi Hendrix, who was recording Electric Ladyland at the time, brought along recording engineer Eddie Kramer to tape his gig in Miami. While Hendrix's set has circulated for years as a bootleg, Miami Pop Festival finally gives this performance an authorized release, with Kramer mixing the 45-year-old tapes. The recording is clean and full of detail, right down to the rattle of the springs in Hendrix's whammy bar and The Experience sound quite good. There's plenty of nuance but noticeably less fire in Hendrix's guitar work, and he seems most comfortable stretching out on slow blues numbers. It's worth noting that Hendrix played two sets on the first day of the May 1968 Miamifest. This release features the evening set in full, while just two tunes from the afternoon show are included as a bonus. "Fire" and "Foxey Lady" sound tougher and more committed in their first run through of the day than their second. Perhaps Kramer and the Hendrix estate should scour the vaults to find the rest of the afternoon set. As it is, MIAMI POP FESTIVAL is a welcome addition to the authorized Hendrix catalog.
PERSONNEL: Jimi Hendrix – vocals, guitar; Noel Redding – bass guitar, backing vocals; Mitch Mitchell – drums.
MIAMI POP FESTIVAL captures the original Jimi Hendrix Experience flush with success and the rightful expectation of more to come. Containing the whole of the trio's evening set and two selections from the afternoon performance at a Festival, the CD is also notable for an early appearance of what would become a staple of the iconic guitarist's live sets for the remainder of his career: "Hear My Train A Comin'" emanates anticipation and foreboding in such a way that Hendrix' emotional investment is unmistakable in both the song and the performance. The debut performance of "Tax Free" remains significant not just as one of the rare covers the band adopted, but because this near-nine minute instrumental rendition offered a launching point for extended improvisation. "Hey Joe" is another of those non-originals - actually the first The Jimi Hendrix Experience single released in England in 1966, but the trio gives the tune an exploratory reading. Hendrix and Mitchell's unusually complementary bond with bassist Noel Redding was perhaps never tighter than at this point in the existence of The Experience. The band engages in a savage romp mid-take show that, in a different context, might well define British blues of the period. Also included in this set is a full color book with a great many photos from the festival with Hendrix both on and off stage and almost always looking like he’s having a great time. The cover photo alone, with Hendrix singing and jamming on his upside-down Strat, is enticing and captures in one frame the energy he delivers to this entire performance. If that’s not enough to raise the hackles of any true Jimi Hendrix Experience fan, then check your pulse… you may be dead.
