A single disc "highlights" edition WINTERLAND is a posthumous live album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Released on September 13, 2011, by Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings, the collection documents the band's six performances at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California between October 10 and 12, 1968. WINTERLAND is clearly the centerpiece of the most recent wave of Hendrix' re-issues. What shines through is how successful Jimi Hendrix, drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding were at constantly emphasizing different aspects of songs, altering the original riffs, tempos and rhythms just enough to make each performance its own unique creation. In the liner notes for this collection, which is filled with beautiful photographs of Hendrix in action, much is made of the idea that the timing for these concerts simply couldn't have better. The Experience has been together for almost exactly two years and grown nearly telepathic with one another on the concert stage. The band were thrilled to be able to stay in one place and stretch out with a series of shows in a venue with much better equipment. Jimi and his rhythm section certainly rose to the occasion, delivering a series of strong and surprise-filled performances. They also made time for special setlist additions, such as the rarely played ''Manic Depression'' and a sneak peak at ''Voodoo Child (Slight Return)'', which would come out as part of Hendrix's final studio album, Electric Ladyland, a week later. Jimi Hendrix ability to do so repeatedly in a live concert setting, together with the fortunate circumstances and timing of this particular weekend, make WINTERLAND a fantastic listening experience.

Over four decades since the six shows – recorded over three nights in October 1968 and that helped define the legend of Jimi Hendrix, it’s easy to forget just how groundbreaking he truly was. But, despite his death less than two years later, Hendrix endures, and even the most hardened of cynics cannot deny the power of performances that robbed Eric Clapton of his reputation as the world’s best guitarist. Obviously there’s none of the studio trickery here that Jimi pioneered on his albums and which seduced fans back in the late 60s, but the dextrous fluidity of his playing, the enviable discipline of his band, and the effortlessly exuberant chemistry they shared are still extraordinary. The rawness of these performances is also impressive, the band magically keeping pace with Hendrix’s seemingly capricious fretwork despite the sense that no one, least of all Hendrix, knows where his fingers will lead him. He succeeds in the unlikely task of making vocal melodies secondary to his instrument. There is, of course, an inevitable masculinity to the whole sound, a flexing of musical muscles despite his between-song exhortations to free the mind. Listening to the trio barrelling from ''Hey Joe'' to ''Purple Haze'' should be proof enough that the legend is more than deserved, and the beauty of Hendrix’s talent is that, however often one hears his recordings, he still retains the ability to surprise. It’s no wonder that the man is still synonymous with guitar virtuosity: no one has ever eclipsed him.
