SMASH HITS is a compilation album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Track Records first issued it on 12th April 1968, in the UK and included all four of the group's singles, both A and B sides, released up to that time, plus four additional songs from the UK edition of Are You Experienced. Reprise Records did not issue the album in the US until July 30, 1969, with some different tracks. It included two songs from Electric Ladyland and three tracks from the UK edition of Are You Experienced, which were previously unreleased in the US, including a stereo version of "Red House" from a different take than the original mono album version. SMASH HITS has been reissued several times on CD, however, it has been largely superseded by more recent and comprehensive compilations, such as 1997' Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix. One of the first hits compilations assembled of Jimi Hendrix's catalog, SMASH HITS remains one of the best, since it keeps its focus narrow and never tries to extend its reach. Basically, this album contains the songs everybody knows from Hendrix, drawing heavily from Are You Experienced, plus adding the non-LP "51st Anniversary" and "Highway Chile". Those non-LP selections may still make this worth seeking out, even if they've appeared on subsequent hits collections, but the main strength of SMASH HITS is that it contains the best-known big-name songs in one place. Maybe not enough to make the collection essential, but still enough to make it a representative, accurate sampler.

You not alone when you say that you well-acquainted with SMASH HITS by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. You listen to the British version of this album which was the one that was released in 1968. It is a good compilation of songs by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, some of them being B-sides of singles, some of them being A-Sides of singles, and some songs which were taken from their albums. Even if by 1968 this was a premature compilation album, it is a very representative compilation of their music because it has some of their best known tracks: "Purple Haze", "Fire", "Hey Joe", "Foxy Lady", "Stone Free" and "The Wind Cries Mary". This last song is a very good Blues song with a very good lead guitar part and showing Jimi Hendrix as a very original and innovative guitar player who was ahead of his time. Among the not very known tracks is "51st Anniversary", which I think it was released as a B-side of a single. Despite the fact that the three members of this band are now dead, this album still has some of the best music they recorded together. The re-mastering from the original 2-track master tapes is excellent. The stereo separation maintains the balance of the expansive guitar sonics and the precise electric bass and drums. At increased volume, a prerequisite for rock, the overall sound is crisp. Part of this reissue is the Western-motif booklet back cover with Jimi, Mitch and Noel dressed in outlaw garb on horseback. This shot was originally included only as a poster on the US 1969 release. SMASH HITS is loaded with superlative psychedelic blues from the master. This one needs more time to gets into, but once when it's in, it's very rewarding. It's Jimi Hendrix, damn, discover it yourself if you hadn't yet. This is great starter.
