LIVE AT MONTEREY is an album that contains the performance by The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded at the Monterey Pop Festival on 18th June 1967. Released on 16th October 2007, it is the third Hendrix album of recordings from Monterey. The split LP Historic Performances Recorded At The Monterey International Pop Festival was released scant weeks before Hendrix's death in September 1970. In 1986, Jimi Plays Monterey, containing the full ten-song set, appeared. Both those albums were released on Hendrix's original U.S. label, the Reprise imprint of Warner Bros. Records. Experience Hendrix, the company formed to reissue the guitarist's work after his recordings were acquired by his family, has put out its own versions of many of his discs, and LIVE AT MONTEREY is its take on the Monterey show. The tapes have been remixed by Eddie Kramer, but the album conforms at least to the CD version of Jimi Plays Monterey. Although Hendrix had become a star in the U.K., he was largely unknown in his home country. He had, however, already been signed to Reprise, which had issued his debut American single, "Hey Joe", on 1st May 1967. That's why he says, "It's ''Hey Joe'' that really brought us here" in introducing the song. Of course, his version was a distinct reinterpretation. He also played his next American single, "Purple Haze", due for release the next day. He oriented his set somewhat for American ears, including such familiar songs as "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Wild Thing", as well as the blues standards "Killing Floor" by Howlin' Wolf, and "Rock Me Baby" by B.B. King. His most recent U.K. hit, "The Wind Cries Mary", was included, as was "Foxey Lady". So, the set was well chosen to introduce him to an American audience. Those aspects of the show are better appreciated on the DVD released in conjunction with this audio version, but even after forty years Hendrix's playing still has the power to astonish the listener.

For many years, only a mad person would have entered the world of rock by collecting the music of Jimi Hendrix. Considering he’s one of the most important and exciting and so on figures in the history of popular music, his back catalogue was largely in worse order. Hendrix’s legacy was all but dumped in a skip over the years. Recently, things have got better. The catalogue has been treated with some respect one. And now you have the Monterey appearance. This live show from 1967 is probably Jimi’s most together, hit-crammed and enjoyable recorded gig, and he even set fire to his guitar. Monterey was recorded when festival and Jimi were younger, faster and more ebullient. Hendrix here talks more and for the only time on a live recording, seems cheerful rather than stoned-cool. LIVE AT MONTEREY now it comes along in better nick, with a special stereo mix by Eddie Kramer, but is nice and clear and takes us away from the ’60s mud of much of Hendrix’s work. LIVE AT MONTEREY is very good, from its delivery of Jimi’s hits, a snappy”Purple Haze”, and other people’s, a thunderously languid ''Like A Rolling Stone'', to its wholesale devastation of The Troggs’ “Wild Thing”. “Killing Floor” still sounds like an avalanche onfire. Both brilliant Hendrix starter pack and summary of everything great about his music, this is something everyone should own.
