Jimi Hendrix & Lonnie Youngblood- GROOVE MAKER- CD- 2005- Pazzazz/Atom Music Ltd.- 883717019240- 400 grn
Arguably the most important and influential artist of the rock era, Jimi Hendrix virtually re-invented the electric guitar. Born is Seattle on the 27th of November 1942 he began his career playing with acts like Little Richard and The Isley Brothers. He moved to Britain to make his big break in 1966, managed by Chas Chandler from the 60's group The Animals. From 1967 onwards he was the hottest rock property in the world, never out of the singles or album charts. A modern day hero, Jimi, sadly, died of a drug overdose in London on the 18th of September 1970. Fortunately Jimi's music lives on these rare tracks recorded with The Lonnie Youngblood Band, are an important and exciting part of the Jimi Hendrix story. Lonnie Youngblood, born Lonnie Thomas, is an American saxophonist and bandleader best remembered for playing with Jimi Hendrix. Youngblood served in the Army for a short time, and returned to Harlem in 1963, where he took over leadership of Curtis Knight's R&B band. The outfit included a talented young guitarist who called himself Jimmy James, but was born Jimi Hendrix. Later on in 1963, Youngblood took the band into the studio and recorded a total of 13 tracks, including alternate takes, with Hendrix on guitar. After Hendrix became a star, this material was bootlegged and repackaged countless times, without Youngblood's consent. In fact only four tracks released as two singles by Fairmount Records were originally issued with Youngblood as the featured artist. These genuine early Lonnie Youngblood tracks have been reissued over and over again alongside recordings of Lonnie & Jimi backing other artists, old tracks by unrelated artists that were doctored to sound like Hendrix and even completely unrelated later recordings claimed to have Jimi playing on them. This is not an official album of Hendrix. These are the Jam sessions 1963 with the saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood. Jimi's very first recorded sessions took place with saxophonist/vocalist Lonnie Youngblood, but in the mid-1990s not much was known for certain about the sessions. Speculation was that the sessions took place in Philadelphia in 1963, but no one was sure beyond a doubt. The Youngblood sessions remained shrouded in mystery, released and recycled on countless releases. Stylistically Youngblood patterned himself after one the greatest sax players ever, and a man who hired Jimi Hendrix to play in his band in 1966. The fact that the sessions took place late in 1963 is generally accepted, but beyond that little else has been revealed about Jimi's time with Youngblood or the professional career of Lonnie himself. The fact that Youngblood has not been interviewed in depth about this period has doubtlessly contributed to the haze of mystery that cloaks one of the significant events in the history of rock - Jimi Hendrix's recorded debut.
