Jimi Hendrix- NO MORE A ROLLING STONE- 2CD- 2004- Purple Haze Records Ltd.- 835810003312- 500 grn
LIMITED EDITION.
Live At Monterey Pop Festival ‘67 is an album that contains the performance by The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded at the Monterey Pop Festival on 18th June 1967. When, in June 1967, Brian Jones sauntered onstage at the Monterey Pop Festival to introduce Jimi Hendrix as “the most exciting guitar player I’ve ever heard”, the Rolling Stone got a bigger reception than the act he was announcing. Although a fair few of those in attendance that final evening – some estimates have put the figure as high as 90,000 – would have heard Hendrix’s British hits on America’s new-fangled FM radio, this was effectively the guitarist’s homeland debut. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the threesome meshed superbly on what is acknowledged as one of the best festival sound systems ever – play their Live At Monterey Pop Festival ‘67 album and you’ll have to remind yourself there are only three people on stage. Wild thing … Hendrix at Monterey. This is peak Hendrixosity, a live performance that has probably never been bettered or was never recorded if it was. The finale of a properly wild version of ''Wild Thing'' was the big talking point – unconventional guitar-playing, humping PA equipment, rolling around on the floor and the sacrificial-type guitar burning. Away from the gimmicks, these twelve minutes establish Hendrix as the embodiment of the counter-culture’s musical revolution. Jimi was a player who saw the blues as a living entity, not a museum piece to be reproduced. With this performance Hendrix let it be known he understood the blues as a spirit rather than a defined expression and presented its power retooled in a way that musically made sense to hippies’ forward-facing ideologies. Ultimately, the Monterey Pop Festival belonged to Hendrix.

What more could a Hendrix fanatic searching for the ultimate live experience ask for? NO MORE A ROLLING STONE contains a total of two CDs, each containing one full concert from the years 1967. Many Hendrix fans already owned bootlegged copies of these concerts, but this was the first time that they were released officially, in crystal clear sound and with informative liner notes. The two discs are an obviously interesting musical journey, showing the rapid musical transformation of Hendrix from showman to serious virtuoso. And although there is a bit of overlap on the discs, the versions of the repeated songs are strikingly different. Live In Stockholm '67 recorded on 24th May 1967 in Stockholm features The Jimi Hendrix Experience in their formative stage, and contains the only official release of raw cover of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". This disc is the shortest of the two, barely over thirty minutes in length, containing no-nonsense, and almost one-hundred-percent jam-less, versions of such standards as "Fire" and "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp". A very cheeky release by Purple Haze Records of the officially deleted Monterey and Stockholm, aka Stages 67, recordings. A nice idea to club together these two contrasting 1967 live sets, Stockholm quite measured and precise, Monterey in total abandon. The Monterey set is now available officially as Live At Monterey and as part of the 4CD various artists box set The Monterey International Pop Festival.
