As if nothing had happened, the old Swamp Fox concocted an incredible surprise for us at the end of 2010 with not only the release of a studio album, but also the release of a CD & DVD set which invites us to relive the famous concert given on November 6, 2008 at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, just a few days before its visit to Paris. From the first title, 'Rich Woman Blues', the tone is set, and it takes you to the guts, direct. The warm, burning voice does not spring from your speakers, it envelops them, bewitches them, erases them so that only this voice remains, and what a voice. A voice that asserted itself fifty years ago, in 1969, with 'Polk Salad Annie', a title that is happily found on the two discs, CDs and DVDs, just before the phenomenal 'Steamy Windows', planetary hit performed by lioness Tina Turner. To the younger generations who are discovering the character, it must be said and repeated, Tony Joe White was sung by Tina Turner, yes, but also by Etta James, Elvis Presley and Ray Charles. Who hasn't shivered, or cried, listening to Ray sing 'Rainy Night in Georgia'...? A title signed Tony Joe White, yes, and that our Old Swamp Fox also interprets us here. The old guitar spits out its saturated Swamp Blues, dirty and gleaming at the same time, letting the harp fly like a bird above the swamps. 'As the Crow Flies' sings Tony, the Stetson pressed over his head. The Old Fox is smart and he knows what will do you the most good: 'You're Gonna Look Good In Blues'. Sure that by diving into a blues like that of good old Tony one can only feel good, and even very good. And after crossing 'Roosevelt and Ira Lee' we let ourselves slide into the marshes in which the Fox takes us. With 'Feeling Snakey' we feel snake and we feel superhuman, as if nothing could escape us... before the emotion overwhelms us again, slowly but surely, with this monumental 'Rainy Night in Georgia'. Lost in the middle of the swamp, under this rain that falls on us, the years and the memories in addition, we crack and the emotion makes us crack while the old fox watches us, hidden behind his dark glasses. Damn album…, damn man that Tony. It had been decades since anyone had managed to make me cry… It had to be on this album. More beautiful, more masterful, more luminous than a simple compilation, this concert on November 6 is not only a compendium of songs that have become essential, of unforgettable hits, but also a real monument-tribute to a character who profoundly marked the music of over the past 50 years. And as the sign of this brave Tony Joe White in the title of the song: 'The Guitar Don't Lie'. Hey yes, it must be said, fucking guy that Tony, and fucking album.
