After Ginger Baker had written music history with Cream, and the follow-up band Blind Faith had been disbanded by Clapton after an LP and US stadium tour, he had the financial backing to start his first solo project. "Ginger Baker's Air Force" started in 1970. Ginger's idea was to mix his musical roots, African music, with popular Western music. It was to become the first "world music" band in music history, long before that term even existed. The last tour started on January 29, 1971 in Leeds, and one day later Air Force played at the Lyceum in London, where the long-awaited meeting of the two drum giants Elvin Jones & Ginger Baker took place. After Air Force had played for half an hour, Elvin came on stage and together with Baker played "Aiko Biaye". During the following track "Do What You Like" Ginger and Elvin had a "drum battle" of the first quality. Elvin said after the concert: "They were great moments. Moments I will remember for the rest of my life." On February 20, 1971, Air Force gave their last concert in England. After only 14 months, Ginger Baker's Air Force was music history.

Contrary to rumor, Baker is not the best drummer in the world. Elvin Jones is. (Not to mention Keith Moon. Or Tony Williams. Or whoever's at the Village Vanguard this week.) And wouldn't want to hear Elvin Jones's ten-piece horn band, either - good horn players lead their own bands, and bands led by drummers tend to leave a lot of space for drum solos. Plus this is a live album and the sound is terrible. Plus starting a rumor that Stevie Winwood is no longer the best Stevie Winwood in the world. Often unfairly compared to contemporaries such as Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker definitely marches to the beat of his own drum, leaving an indelible imprint within a number of genres. Putting aside his well-known, unpredictable personality for a moment and focusing on music, Baker could be described as the Forrest Gump of drumming – and has quite often been at the cutting edge of many musical genres. In terms of feel, sound, setup, and technique, his approach is much like an abstract painter (not surprising since he has always had an interest in modern art) as he borrows from his favorite drummers, but at the same time, is all about forging his own path. If you’re not familiar with his approach, the following list will open your ears to one of our greatest stylists. Baker may not be anyone’s definition of a role model, but you may certainly want his sound to influence your style.
