Ginger Baker’s Nutters- LIVE IN MILAN ITALY 1981- 2CD- 2010-
- Voiceprint Group Of Companies- 5060230861722- 500 grn
UK two CD live archive release from the legendary British drummer. Part of the band on this set is acclaimed Jazz guitarist Billy Jenkins and his long time cohort Ian Trimmer. The Nutters played a interesting blend of Jazz, Rock, Blues and Fusion with an occasional look at Gingers back catalog. They toured Italy extensively in the '80s, home to Ginger for most of that decade, but never got round to making a studio album. This Ginger Baker’s outfit, musically speaking, is hard to label, rock, blues, fusion and jazz elements in a pretty nice mixture…..great & rare show, excellent recording quality. Not sure about 2 or 3 songs’ titles. Ginger Baker, one of the best rock drummers, federated around him in this LIVE IN MILAN ITALY 1981 some excellent musicians working on the European jazz scene (Billy Jenkins guitar, Ian Trimmer saxophone). This gives a sometimes bitter record where jazz, blues, rock and fusion mixes but where musicians always exhale the pleasure of playing together. A few moments of pure magic when the saxo suddenly flies in a long sentence or the drums take primitive accents. The sound is of good quality, each instrument stands out well, the audience is not invasive. The booklet, with interesting information, would have been better developed
PERSONNEL: Ginger Baker – drums, percussion; Ian Trimmer – sax, vocal; Billy Jenkins – guitar, vocal; Keith Hale – keyboards, vocal; Rikki Legair – bass, vocal.
The influential drummer Ginger Baker died at the age of 80 on October 6th, 2019, at a hospital in Canterbury. The man, whose life was celebrated in the award winning 2012 documentary film “Beware of Mr. Baker”, had struggled with heroin addiction throughout his life and was diagnoed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2013, after years of heavy smoking. He also had chronic back pain from degenerative osteoarthritis. Baker was diagnosed with serious heart issues in 2016 and was reported to be recovering from open heart surgery in June of the same year. Baker’s family reported that he was critically ill again on September 25th, 2019. Days later he was dead. Nicknamed “Ginger” for his flaming red hair, Peter Edward Baker was born in Lewisham, South London, on August 19th, 1939. As a co-founder of psychedelic blues rock supergroup Cream and his other work in the 1960s and ’70s, he earned a reputation as “rock’s first superstar drummer”. Playing a style that melded jazz and African rhythms he went on to pioneer jazz fusion and world music. Working with everyone from Steve Winwood and members of The Beatles to Hawkwind, Gary Moore and Masters Of Reality, he collaborated with John Lydon and experimentalist Bill Laswell and went on to form a trio with jazz giants Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell. Due to health issues, the last years of Ginger Baker’s life were less productive but they did see the release of many re-issues and archival releases containing old live material. If you made it this far, reading about the great drummer’s life, salute you! Now, go listen to his music!
