The Official Ginger Baker Bootleg Series does an outstanding job filling in the public gaps of an incredible career that includes a number of bands that never recorded studio albums, groups that may only be remembered for "classic" lineups and one-off performances...which is the category for this soundboard recording from the 1978 Berlin Jazzfest with Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Africa 70 (performing as Ginger Baker & African Friends). The two tracks [clocking in at nearly 31 minutes] are sizzling improvisational drum/percussion gems, which feature Baker locking into cool grooves that gets the crowd fired up for more. Between the numbers, Baker tells the audience that he had not seen the band in a year and arrived in Berlin one day before the gig; which makes the brief show even more special. While it can be quite easy [on the surface] to dismiss the album as a must for serious fans, the world beats should be a neat universal call for anyone with even the most casual interest in hearing a musical genius at work....with a little help from his friends.

In November 1978 after a short period setting up his own Polo Club, Ginger found himself in Berlin for a concert with his old friend Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Africa 70 at the Berlin Jazzfest. The tracks contained on this album are a magnificent blend of styles and one which went down exceedingly well with the audience. Although best described as a jam, the music is never boring or self indulgent. This high quality recording is a fine testament to the pairing of Fela and Africa 70 and Ginger Baker and captures a real moment in time where the language is music and the currency is virtuosity. This live recording is one of several releases based on the private archives of legendary drummer Ginger Baker, which finally see the light of day. Although not intended for a formal release and suffering from "bootleg" sound quality problems, the musical importance of this material is so significant, that it overshadows any technicalities and is essentially a Godsend. This album brings a live recording of Baker playing with his old friend Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his ensemble Africa 70 during the Berlin Jazzfest. In many respects this recording is a culmination of Baker's long association with African music and his Jazz-World Fusion, before his return to more conventional Jazz music. Definitely worth investigating, especially in view of the fact that the sound quality on this album is quite excellent.
