BBC SESSIONS is a blues rock album by Rory Gallagher, released in 1999. The album was compiled from live recordings made at the BBC by Gallagher's brother Dónal and released posthumously.
...the live disc of this 2 CD set rivals Irish Tour '74 for the playing, emotion, etc. Time and time again, we're finding that the BBC has a veritable treasure trove of musical gems in their vaults. While the studio disc didn't thrill me quite as much as the live disc, that's nitpicking. The studio disc is still chock full of great performances and is worth having. From the liner notes, it appears that Rory's brother has many more hours of BBC tapes at his disposal. One only hopes that he can put together another collection to rival this. Although Rory may have passed too early, his legacy will continue to grow with high sound quality, well thought out, releases like this.

The resurrected Buddha acquired the rights to much of Rory Gallagher's prime material in 1999. They began their reissue program with his first two albums, then they moved to what most hardcore fans would consider the crown jewel of the series, a double-disc collection of Gallagher's BBC SESSIONS. Like most lead guitarists, he would often expand his music when playing live, turning in vibrant, exciting versions of his material, peppered with great guitar solos. Although it lacks the kinetic spark generated whenever a musician performs in front of a live audience, BBC SESSIONS is one of the finest live sets in his catalog, thanks to its crystalline fidelity, strong performances, and classy presentation. Certainly, this collection isn't for anyone that isn't already devoted to Gallagher, but for those who are, there's plenty to cherish here - individual solos, impassioned vocals, and good liner notes. It's an excellent, worthy addition to his catalog, and it helps confirm Gallagher's gift as a blues-rock guitarist. This two-disc set is split between "in concert" and "studio" discs, featuring Rory's long-standing trio of Lou Martin (keyboards), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Rod deAth (drums). It's the full cream, scooped up from a potential 10-hour tape-pile. The live disc displays the hurtling juggernaut that was the Gallagher gig norm, blues purity retained at rock distortion levels, fingers blurred and screaming as they fly over the frets. Lou Martin excels throughout, flaying boogie piano on "Country Mile" and squeezing the organ hard on "Roberta". Gradually, the subversive rumbling of deAth's bass drum impacts on the frontal lobes, the first disc programmed for steady acceleration, his foot-pedal beating faster and faster, until the whole band attains the continuous crescendo that is "Used To Be". All the while, Gallagher keeps up the tonal variety, constantly arriving at unexpected solo structures, mixing aggression with imagination. The studio disc seems slightly less frenzied after this, but reveals other facets, a gentler timbre to the axe. "They Don't Make Them Like You" adopts a jazzy lounge trundle, while "Daughter Of The Everglades" is a strangely psychedelic pop song, complete with hookline chorus, cranky fairground clavinet and heavily reverb-ed guitar solo. PLAY VERY LOUD !!!
