Come on now - have you ever even heard of Taste? One might have heard of Rory Gallagher and his solo 'guitar hero' career in the Seventies (not to mention that his untimely death in 1995 did lead to a sudden rise of interest towards the man, perverse as it is), but nobody remembers Taste, the band that arguably represents his best and freshest period of activity. Taste were indeed 'taste', and an acquired one: one of the last great blues-rock bands, and certainly the last 'purist' blues-rock band with any significant importance (unless you count The Doobie Brothers, of course). They were an Irish 'power trio', modelling themselves after Cream, but they rarely sounded like Cream - not because they couldn't, but because they wouldn't. Drummer John Wilson was a really talented dude, with drums cleverly bashing all over the place, but he never engaged in lengthy, pointless drum solos, like Ginger Baker (I mean, he did drum solos, but short ones, and that's an entirely different matter). Bassist Richard McCracken might not have had the guts of Jack Bruce or Andy Fraser, but his steady rhythm work is highly laudable nevertheless. And, of course, there's the bright star of guitar player and lead vocalist Rory Gallagher (not to be confused with the wretched Oasis twins). Any Rory Gallagher fan will love this. Excellent recordings considering their age. The first half, tracks 1-7 are from October '68, and so would not include the original lineup of Gallagher, Ketteringham and Damery, but McCracken and Wilson, though the tracks 6-14 are from July '67 must do, though there is no reference to them on the jacket. 'The Taste' split in August '68 after all the hard work touring since '66 and it was almost impossible to get any recordings of them until now. The first half is a bit more polished, the second half more raw, giving a flavour of the first Taste. Absolutely brilliant!
TRACKS 1-7:
'Taste Featuring Rory Gallagher - In Concert', Recorded Live At The Marquee Club, London On 25th October 1968.
TRACKS 8-14:
In The Beginning – Recorded In July 1967 in Ireland.
Gallagher emerged from the Irish showbands of the mid-’60s as a teenage prodigy and blues fanatic. He formed Taste with two Cork musicians, Eric Kitteringham (bass) and Norman D’Amery (drums), soon descending on Belfast, 200 miles to the north, where the Maritime Hotel still reverberated from the excitement of seeing Van Morrison and Them in 1964. On a demo recorded at the Maritime to attract the interest of Decca in London, Taste sound like a beat combo with blues leanings; there are times when Gallagher’s harmonica is as prominent as his guitar. But an instrumental, “Norman Invasion”, suggests he may be paying close attention to Jimi Hendrix. And be thinking, perhaps, that Taste should become more of a power trio. Prior to Gallagher’s death in 1995, a reconciliation took place of the classic Taste lineup, and there was even talk of them playing a peace concert for Northern Ireland. Listening to Taste on I’ll Remember as young musicians with their lives ahead of them, it’s poignant to think that none of them plays music any more.
Also released as ''First'' and a Rory Gallagher album ''In The Beginning - An Early Taste Of Rory Gallagher''. Contrary to what cover says, this album was recorded with Norman Damery on drums and Eric Kitteringham on bass. The album was recorded in July, 1967 and released after The Split Of Taste. First issued in 1974.
