One of the progenitors of heavy metal and British prog rock, Deep Purple had several different distinct lineups during the band's run, and there was always a shuffling of personnel, it seems, which makes the overall consistency of Deep Purple's recorded legacy pretty impressive, especially in retrospect. This three-disc set takes a particularly unique approach to the band's history, presenting instead a parallel one, with tracks from various bandmembers' projects in other guises and bands. The series THE MANY FACES OF is in itself a good idea: to put on 3CDs a bit of the spirit of what an influential group can be in the eyes of those who composed it or by those who they inspired. Rare are the boxes that delight in totality. Often, you can find your account on one, or even two pucks. This is not the case for Alice Cooper and it is not the case here either. Of course you are left wanting more when the group's classics are covered with less success than the originals which still leave a lasting impression on us. But you'll be also happy to find here the original productions of Nic Simper and Rod Evans, as well as the covers of classics from the History Of Rock, a History to which Deep Purple has made a great contribution, even if the names of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice are less cited than Page, Bonham, Jones and Plant or Ozzy Osbourne even though they have nothing to be ashamed of for their production, far from it. You'll may also be a little disappointed that each CD struggles to reach an hour, whereas the additional quarter of an hour possible would have allowed you to further explore the lesser-known grooves of the MK I and post-MK IV eras. However, let's not ignore the exercise presented here because its palette is rich enough for you to have pleasant moments... and, in the end, to return to the originals.
