A true guitar hero, Jake E. Lee, shows the kids how it’s done on this awesome collection of cover tunes recorded with some of the greatest voices in hard rock. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL was released on 16th September 2008. Features covers of Van Halen, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Metallica and others with vocals by Glenn Hughes, Jani Lane, Stephen Pearcy, Chuck Billy and more. While he doesn't issue albums comprised of original music on a regular basis anymore, you can always count on former Ozzy Osbourne/Badlands guitarist Jake E. Lee to pop up on tribute albums. And on 2008's RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL, you get an album's worth of reworkings of songs that other rockers made famous, with Lee's six-string doing battle with a variety of singers. As with most tribute albums, some of the songs work well (Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes' "Journey To The Center Of The Mind", which features some tasty licks), while others... not so much (Metallica's "Seek And Destroy", on which it sounds like Lee is trying to cram in as many guitar fills as possible). Other highlights include a pair of tracks where it's the singer (rather than Lee) who makes the music memorable, including Lemmy on AC/DC's "It's A Long Way To The Top" and Glenn Hughes on Queen's "Get Down, Make Love". It's always a treat to spot some new or largely unheard Lee guitar work - however, RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL sounds mostly like an excuse to jam the night away. Picture Jake E. Lee playing a house party in high school, and you're not far off from what RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL has to offer.
PERSONNEL: Jake E. Lee - guitars; Lemmy Kilmeister, Glenn Hughes, Jizzy Pearl, Jani Lane, Alex Mitchell, Phil Lewis, Kory Clarke, Stevie Rachelle, Chuck Billy, Stephen Pearcy - vocals.
Always one of the most underated guitarists of the 80's Jake E. Lee is mostly known by the two Ozzy hits from his tenure still being played on the radio: "Bark At The Moon" and "Shot In The Dark". Fine songs, but there is far more to appreciate about Jake than just those two numbers. Both of the two albums he recorded with Ozzy, not to mention his three Badlands recordings, are chock full of fantastic playing by this man. Needless to say, many fans around the world have missed him since he opted to take a leave from the music industry about ten years ago. Here's an album you probably wouldn't have known about if it hadn't dropped the CD on your desk for a listen. Now, you was relax and which did fill with confidence that it'd be any good. Maybe it's to do with the track listing. All covers of course, that's what Jake does, but there are a half dozen Ted Nugent/Amboy Dukes tracks here to go along with others by Van Halen, Metallica, AC/DC and Queen, and there are a whole bunch of guest singers. Only Stephen Pearcy sings more than once. Perhaps of most interest is hearing how Lemmy handles ''It's A Long Way To The Top''. Pretty well actually but the problem is, it's a novelty, so the repeat value is just not there despite the general quality of the album being very good, with one major exception. Glenn Hughes takes lead vocals on Queen's ''Get Down, Make Love'' which isn't exactly their best song despite Jake's excellent axe work. Overall though, wouldn't you rather hear these songs by the original artist? Of course you would.
