LIVE IN TOKYO is a live album by Hughes Turner Project, a collaboration between Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner. It was released on 21st August 2002 on MTM Music and Pony Canyon Records. LIVE IN TOKYO was the only live record to be released by the Hughes Turner Project. The album was recorded on the first leg of their tour to support their debut album HTP. For the most part the two sing their own songs solo, only performing duets on the HTP songs. LIVE IN TOKYO features a kick ass selection of songs that are accented by the incredible vocal power of Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner. The songs are the real highlight, are pounded out with authority, while selected cuts from the self-titled HTP album are also included in the mix. The backing band, known as the "The Tokyo Mafia" deliver the goods as well. For the Japanese leg of tour the pair were joined by native musicians Akira Kajiyama on guitar, Toshio Egawa on keyboards and Yoshihiro Kudo on drums. While Kajiyama had contributed some guitar solos to the HTP album, the others had not taken part in its recording and this is the only Hughes Turner Project release they appear on. The European version of the album includes the studio bonus track ''Against The Wall'', which had originally been released as the bonus track on the Japanese version of HTP. However, the European version excludes the live recording of the Black Sabbath track "No Stranger To Love", which only appears on the Japanese version.

Them it made sense to unite, which they did as the Hughes Turner Project. And with demand in Japan for all things Purple continuing for decades, what better locale than to record a live album in the Land Of The Rising Sun? LIVE IN TOKYO will provide some much needed post-Ian Gillan Deep Purple/post-Ronnie James Dio Rainbow nourishment for starved fans. But... Who is Akira Kajiyama? Well, he is the guitarist with the Hughes Turner Project that nearly steals the show on the LIVE IN TOKYO album. This guy has the most closely perfected technique of guitar virtuosity. Add to this the wonderful song selections, and the magnificent talents of Glenn Hughes, and you get a marvelous listening experience. Joe Lynn Turner is a master of that 80's, sound that was so commercial during that decade. But, the secret is that he is also a superior hard rock vocalist. This live album is something quite different. Not only do we get the best of their material from their debut album in a live setting, we get a range of top shelf, classic songs from their past history, which combines some of the best songs released by the bands Deep Purple and Rainbow from their tenure in those bands. While songs from their Hughes Turner Project do come to life better in this live environment, it is the songs from their past that are the stars of this release. The man that the Japanese dubbed "The Voice Of Rock" again proves himself here with these Deep purple numbers. Joe Lynn Turner does his Rainbow number's with justice. The two studio albums that this duo released were both somewhat disappointing, it was never through the quality of their musicianship, but just that they were a bit generic in their writing. This live album increases their value, as well as showcasing the amazing vocal capabilities of both gentlemen, along with the guitaring of Akira Kajiyama, who is quite scintillating in places. This guy is an incredible player. Fans of these gentlemen's contributions to Deep Purple and Rainbow will appreciate this album the best.
