Various Artists- TO CRY YOU A SONG: A COLLECTION OF TULL TALES- CD- 1996-

It is a very solid set of tributes which should delight most Jethro Tull fans. The covers mainly focus on the 1968-1971 period - not unexpected since three of the contributors are Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker, the other three original members of Jethro Tull. Luminaries like Keith Emerson, Phil Manzanera, Dave Pegg and John Wetton also contribute. The liner note feature comments from many of the artists regarding who they are and their remarks about Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull, which sometimes makes for interesting reading. The standout track is a superlative rendition of "Minstrel In The Gallery". Robert Berry's arrangement and performance is outstanding, putting a new and slightly Celtic spin on the guitar-heavy classic while also giving it a stronger beat. Renditions of "Aqualung" and "Teacher" toe the line of the originals fairly closely, although Magellan's little additions to the former work quite nicely. Roy Harper's minimalist "songwriter's confessional" spin on "Up The 'Pool" is unexpected and works quite nicely. Mick Abrahams lets his guitar go on one of Tull's earliest popular tracks, "Cat's Squirrel". And Emerson joins Abrahams, Bunker and Cornick on an instrumental version of "Living In The Past".

It actually could be, but there must be well-defined criteria to consider a certain tribute album as a masterpiece. This is a great compilation of Jethro Tull's music performed by great musicians. If you are a fan of Jethro Tull, it's a must collection. Well, actually this is not truly a tribute compilation as there are two songs: "A Tull Tale" written by Gardner of Magellan and "Cat's Squirrel" written by Abrahams. The compilation album is opened beautifully with "A Tull Tale", an instrumental track written specifically for this tribute, featuring Stan Johnson on flute. Containing pieces of "Bouree" and other Tull classics, it serves as an introduction to Magellan's excellent cover of "Aqualung". It starts off with a great piano intro, then it goes into an industrial music combined with metal guitar sound on the verses. The guitar solo is played on a slightly different chord progression, but it sounds really well. "Up The Pool" is performed wonderfully with great acoustic guitar work and unique vocal by Roy Harper. Really good. The great song "Nothing Is Easy" is performed remarkably well by John Wetton on vocals. "Mother Goose" is performed by Lief Sorbye in a great arrangement. No any track that is performed worse than the original version - all of them are great arrangements. Best of the best performance is the one performed by Glenn Hughes "To Cry You A Song". As you may have known that the vocal timbre between Ian Anderson and Glenn Hughes is totally different and you might have imagined that Glenn Hughes voice only suitable for Deep Purple or Trapeze. But what hhappen here is truly a fabulous combination of energetic music with organ solo and rocking and funky voice of Hughes. Wow! It's a wonderful voice man! In summary, if you are a die hard fan of Jethro Tull, this tribute is a compilation that will definitely satisfy you. Production and sound quality are to notch. Highly recommended.
