Ten years ago the success story of Brazen Abbot under the direction of the bulgarien composer/multi-instrumentalist Nikolo Kotzev began. Kotzev formed his own group Brazen Abbot with ex-Europe musicians Ian Haughland and Mic Michaelis as instrumentalists and the two vocalists Goran Edman and Thomas Vikstrom. 1995 saw the arrival of the debut LIVE AND LEARN, for which the guitar maestro earned enthusiastic reviews from all over the world. Impressive debut LIVE AND LEARN from Brazen Abbot, the melodic rock group formed by ex-Baltimoore guitarist Nikolo Kotzev. Kotzev was always more than just a superb guitarist, as his songwriting and keyboard playing in Brazen Abbot clearly proves. Kotzev has come pretty close to perfecting the melodic rock album with Brazen Abbot. Hes taken the classic Rainbow sound and incorporated elements of other classic bands as well as more theatrical arrangements. The melodies are impeccable and the musicianship is just as impressive as the star-studded vocal performances. There really isn’t a weak moment on LIVE AND LEARN, and as impressive as it is, its probably the least stellar of all the Brazen Abbot albums. LIVE AND LEARN is an incredibly impressive melodic rock album, and the albums that followed were even better. If you’re a fan of 80s style melodic rock, you really must check out Brazen Abbot, and LIVE AND LEARN is the perfect place to start. SPV reissued LIVE AND LEARN in 2005 feature new cover artwork, but have not been remastered nor do they contain bonus tracks.

The first incarnation of the Brazen Abbot line up featured a certain Glenn Hughes who gave the band the much needed impetus to put out a hard rocking and highly impressive debut, which showcased an enjoyable and up tempo 80’s production and feel. The music was guitar drenched, the backing vocals were prominent and plentiful, and the ballads, namely the title track ''Live And Learn'', were impressive and powerful. The latter had an interesting violin solo in amongst the madness and it’s a shame Glen left the group after this release because he does such a great job. The best track of the album is the outstanding ''When November Reigns'', which is the most powerful track of the set with overwhelming backing vocals – and it’s amazing to think this was written and recorded in the mid 90’s, because it sounds like a product of the late 80’s. The back end of the album doesn’t quite have the same impact of the first half, but this remains an impressive debut which is much underrated.
