WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS is the debut album by singer-songwriter Joe Cocker, released on 23rd April 1968. It was certified Gold in the US. The title track was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and originally performed by The Beatles. In June 2015, the Audio Fidelity company released a limited reissue of the album in hybrid SACD format as a tribute to Joe Cocker. Joe Cocker's debut album holds up extraordinarily well across five decades, the singer's performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. It's Cocker's voice, a soulful rasp of an instrument that carries this album and makes into profound listening experiences. But the surprises in the arrangements, tempo, and approaches taken help make this an exceptional album. Tracks like "Just Like A Woman", with its soaring gospel organ above a lean textured acoustic and light electric accompaniment, and the guitar-dominated rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" all help make this an exceptional listening experience. The 2015, the Audio Fidelity company reissue includes audiophile-quality sound.

Where better to begin Joe Cocker's maiden voyage album is by covering a Beatles classic as well as a pair of Bob Dylan classics from The Basement Tapes era. But what kicks this album off is a rendition of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright" in which Cocker reinvented in his own right and became a live classic. Speaking of the titled song of this debut can best describe the array of talent from various musicians within the U.K. except the lead-off track featuring musicians from the West coast of the U.S. recorded at A&M studios in Los Angeles. The rest of the album was recorded at London's famed Olympic Studios. Although Cocker was known as interpreter of other artists' material, he has written or co-written the odd tune here and there. On here he co-authored with Chris Stainton on "Change In Louise", "Sandpaper Cadillac". "Marjorine" was collaborated by Cocker, Stainton, Tom Rattigan and Frank Myles. "Bye Bye Blackbird" is wonderfully interpreted here with brilliant guitar work by Jimmy Page. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" features wah-wah guitar by future Wings member Henry McCulllough. The only other cover here is "Do I Still Figure In Your Life?" with nice organ work by Steve Winwood, who by this time was in Traffic. This album would also served as Jimmy Page's last burst of session work before taking off with Led Zeppelin, who later that same year would record their first album at that very studio used to record this album. Let us not forget that it was Page in particular that lit up the title track and gave new life to The Beatles classic. Believe, you'll love it too.
