Jimmy Page- PLAYIN' UP A STORM- CD- 2011- The Store For Music Ltd. (UK)- 5413992592395- 400 grn
PLAYIN' UP A STORM, aka No Introduction Necessary, was released on 13th February 2011. Tracks collection of late 60's pre-Led Zeppelin recordings of Jimmy Page, includes guest musicians Albert Lee, John Paul Jones and Nicky Hopkins. This CD will be of interest to more serious Led Zeppelin fans as it brings John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page together for the first time, and the team-up of blues legend Albert Lee with Jimmy is indicated for the faithful. More casual fans can give it a pass, there's very little on display here by Mr. Page that indicates the "Shapes Of Things" to come, but it gives props to Mr. Page's blues chops. The record presents fourteen tracks of conservative rock and roll and rhythm and blues, coming like an exercise of nostalgia, already old for its time, graced with a few highlights, say Lightning Hopkins' "Burn Up" and the extensive blues "One Long Kiss". It's a "super session" studio album. Initially it was conceived as debut album by Keith De Groot, aka Gerry Temple, a new singer discovered by producer Reg Tracey. The sessions took place at Olympic Studios in London. Nine songs had been completed when neither Lee nor Sullivan were going to be able to take part in next booked session. Reg Tracey called Jimmy Page for the last round of recordings. Page had already worked on ''Beck's Bolero'' with Jones and Hopkins. Page's participation likely took place in either September or December 1967 during breaks from touring with The Yardbirds. Eventually Reg Tracey decided that De Groot had been sidelined by the talent of session musicians. There were many reissues in different countries under different titles. The album includes several original cuts composed by Keith De Groot and Nicky Hopkins.
PERSONNEL: Jimmy Page - guitar, Albert Lee - guiar, John Paul Jones - bass, Nicky Hopkins - piano, Keith De Groot - vocals, Jim Sullivan - guitar, Chris Hughes - tenor saxophone, Clem Cattini - drums.
For hardcore Page fans, PLAYIN' UP A STORM is a somewhat obscure pickup. This album offers a glimpse of the early workings of Page and Jones with a few other musicians as well. The tracks on this album are nothing to get excited over. All of these tracks sound like the pop music that was popular in the fifties and early sixties. The guitar plays a very minor role in the majority of these tracks. Page has only a handful of solos and they are nowhere near the caliber you would expect. The good news is that if you enjoy the pop music from the late fifties, these tracks are not terrible - the vocals are solid and the melodies are at least average. For a very Buddy Holly sounding track, check out "Rave On". "Lovin' Up A Storm" is apparently a fan favorite. Collectors will notice that the fourteen tracks listed here are the exact same tracks as what can be found on disc one of Before The Balloon Went Up, which can be found in the Jimmy Page discography. PLAYIN' UP A STORM contains one half of Before The Balloon Went Up album, but is much better as it does not contain the second disc of cover songs. Zeppelin's collectors aquire(d) this album anyway.
