COVER TO COVER is the fourth album by the Jeff Healey Band. It is an album of cover songs, released in June 13, 1995. COVER TO COVER is album for the lap playing Canadian blues-rock guitarist. On the album Jeff‘s playing 14 favorite covers from 1966’s British Yardbirds “Shape Of Things” to 1969’s “Communication Breakdown” from Led Zeppelin. It’s not the well known chart hits who were chosen but the album classics from the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’Wolf and of course there’s a Jimi Hendrix classic which is “Angel”(in 1970 released as B-side for “Night Bird Flying”). The album is produced by Thom Panunzio and features guest appearances by “Blues Traveler” John Popper, Paul Shaffer, Amanda Marshall and “E-street” key man Roy Bittan. "Shapes Of Things" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

There is a lot to like with Jeff Healey's COVER TO COVER. While touring and writing, the group realized that they were frequently doing covers of older tunes and figured they might as well make a cover album. In general, counts cover albums a bit cheap. Even artists that pump out albums where the majority of tracks are tweaked covers of other's work is hard to swallow. Few can add originality and make this work (to see this work well, see Johnny Winter material). Jeff and company do add some spice to some dated, lesser known tracks and in some cases, bring these tracks life that they never had when originally created. The prime example here is "Yer Blues." Beatles enthusists will no doubt disagree, but Lennon could not bring blues grit to a song that, lyrically, deserves such. Healey and company do just this by better pairing guitar and bass and making them louder and more aggressive. The Beatles were great but when it comes to straight blues, not so much. It seems like there are hundreds of covers out there of "Stop Breaking Down," the Robert Johnson classic. Healey attempts to bring an electrified version to this album with some success. Although probably not as original as the White Stripes version, the cover presented on this album is a hair on the better side of average. "As The Years Go Passing By" and "Me And My Crazy Self" round out the better covers on this album with the former sounding straight out of the eighties, Gary Moore style, and the latter being an acoustic, stripped down cut with emphasis on Healey's voice. Throughout COVER TO COVER, we hear what we always hear on Jeff Healey albums, wonderful guitar ability with accentuated vibrato on account of his unique playing style. The music is sometimes good but most of the covers fail to deliver the intensity or originality that set the cover apart from the original. As such, mush of this album sounds like a token rehashing but that does not mean there are not a few tracks worth listening to. Overall, the group pulled off the cover album better than most but only a few songs have staying power. "Yer Blues" and "Me And My Crazy Self" are probably the two that match or best their original versions. Good guitar playing, fair vocals result in an album that has its moments.
