The Jeff Healey Band- FEEL THIS- CD- 1992/1995-
- Arista Records, Inc./BMG (A Bertelsmann Music Group Company)- 743211208727- 400 grn
FEEL THIS is the third album by the Jeff Healey Band, released in November 1992. Third time up for sightless guitar wunderkid Jeff Healey and gang; FEEL THIS offers the power trio's meatiest and most satisfying outing. JHB's brand of roadhouse rock can be somewhat bland on disc; here the group captures much more of its trademark live intensity than in the past. The unobtrusive addition of keyboards adds a more expansive dimension to several tracks. Boogie fans will want to check out the ZZ Top-like "Cruel Little Number"; blues-rockers will come away satisfied with the likes of "House That Love Built." Hip-hop connoisseurs, on the other hand, will likely want to avoid JHB's rap spoof on "If You Can't Feel Anything Else."
PERSONNEL: Jeff Healey – guitars, lead vocals; Joe Rockman – bass guitar, backing vocals; Tom Stephen – drums, backing vocals; Washington Savage, Paul Shaffer – keyboards; Joe Hardy – additional keyboards, additional percussion; Richard Chycki – handclaps, dobro; Dawn Zeeman, Patricia Worrall, Sharron Robert – handclaps; Amanda Marshall, Jimi Jamison, Molly Johnson, Mischke Butler – backing vocals; Warren "Wiggy" Toll – backing vocals, handclaps; Jr. John – rap.
As with Hell To Pay, Jeff Healey's third album FEEL THIS leaves you inspired and impressed. This album does depart a bit from the format of its predecessor, but you cannot help but draw the same conclusions about its worth. This album features even more radio friendly blues rock. He makes heavy use of female backing vocals, mostly to repeat key words of a chorus. The emphasis is usually placed on vocals. Jeff Healey fans have been yearning for a guitar centered blues rock album since his debut. Sadly, FEEL THIS does not deliver on this front although there are guitar solos on each track. You would like anything that kicks a bit of ass on this album. If one accepts fact that Healey will not deliver a blockbuster instrumental track to the likes of "Little Wing," there are a few strong tracks here. Surprisingly, "Cruel Little Number," the albums opener, delivers. This track has one of the best solos on the album and has solid vocal lines as well. Unfortunately, it does not take long for this aura of badassness to disappear. The second track, "Leave The Light On," is similar to many of his slower blues rock tracks. Other highlights (also heavier tracks) include "Evil An Here To Stay" and "It Could All Get Blown Away." Little bit surprise to hear rapping by Jr. John on "If You Can't Feel Anything Else." It is only heard during the verses of the track and there is a surprisingly large amount of tasty guitar work otherwise. The chorus is not bad either. FEEL THIS is a bit heavier overall when compared to Hell To Pay and as a result, it just a bit more, but it is still a bit too soft. There are a few noteworthy tracks to be found here, but also many disposable tracks as well. Recommended for Jeff Healey fans, but not the greatest of introductions to his work.
