UNFINISHED MUSIC No.1: TWO VIRGINS is the first of three experimental albums released by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Apple Records. It was the result of an all-night session of musical experimentation with Yoko in John's home studio at Kenwood, while his wife, Cynthia Lennon, was on holiday in Greece. Lennon and Ono's 1968 debut recording is known not only for its avant-garde content, but also for its cover, which shows the couple naked. This made the album controversial to both the public and the parent record company EMI, which refused to distribute it. In an attempt to avoid controversy, the LP record was sold in a brown paper bag. John and Yoko went on to release a further two related recordings: Unfinished Music No.2: Life With The Lions and the Wedding Album. The album was reissued by Secretly Canadian on 11 November 2016. Turns out the very sound of falling in love is just as abstract, subjective and loopy as the concept itself. Yoko Ono and John Lennon are two of history’s greatest lovers, and UNFINISHED MUSIC No.1: TWO VIRGINS is the musique concrete fever dream document of the pair falling in love in real time. It’s a Cageian suite recorded over one weekend in Spring 1968 at Lennon’s Kenwood home. Distant conversations, comedic role playing and footsteps, laughter, birdcalls and plunking piano lines, silly songs and space, tape delay stretching shrieks, bass rumbles and moans to the moon and back again. It’s two young people attempting to weird one another out, attempting to make one another laugh, falling deeply into one another. The smoke and wine is nearly audible. This reissue also includes bonus track ''Remember Love'', which did not appear on the original release.

Pop fanatics, please step off. This is musique concrete, if you don't know what that is don't listen to it. Leave your ''Love Me Do'' at the door. The record is not unlike what you might get if you turned on a tape recorder for a random half-hour in your home - snatches of inaudible conversation far away from the microphone, footsteps, wind, and so on. Conceptual "music" in the Cage-ian sense, yes, but not popular music of the kind with which John Lennon had been previously associated in any sense at all. It's that this is violently divisive music. After Lennon had faced a litany of disparaging jabs from the counterculture from his misinterpreted ''Revolution 9'' in early 1968, he was convinced to ''come over to the other side'' and start donning the customary black beret and gloves of a hardline Maoist left winger. Part of that whole ''look'' was making real clear John was now subscribing to that old radical avant-garde canard - true art must shock the bourgeois. How you feel about that idea largely will dictate how you feel about this album. If you feel beauty can be found in apparent ugliness and noise, and if you appreciate the value and inherent integrity of a huge pop star so willing to go outside his, or anyone else's, comfort zone in terms of what music is supposed to sound like, then you'll probably like this.
