1991 COMING TOGETHER FOR THE OCCASIONAL QUARTET.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, perhaps the first and only folk super group, are nothing if not sporadic in their collective performances and recordings. Nothing wrong with that however as all members of this occasional quartet release and perform solo or in any number of configurations beautifully between times and can always be counted on to come together when the need arises. One such event followed the tragic helicopter crash that caused the deaths of concert impresario Bill Graham and his girlfriend in 1991. The tribute concert, played by many of those artists supported most notably by Graham across many years, was organised for San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, less than a week after the tragedy. CSN&Y was an inevitable inclusion in the line-up, having been regulars at Graham's Fillmore venues in the early days and had indeed maintained close contact throughout Bill's life. David Crosby tells a story during the proceedings about asking Bill for money back in the day, and noting that he would always know when Crosby required the cash for drugs on which occasions it would be withheld. This set performed by the foursome features a spirited selection of group classics with the odd solo number thrown in for good measure, one such being one of Bill s all-time favourite songs: Neil Young's ''Only Love Can Break Your Heart''. All together passionately, CSN&Y on the same stage! Original broadcast of Bill Graham Memorial Concert at Polo Field, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, November 3, 1991. Bill Graham was arguably America's foremost rock promoter, from the nascent psychedelic scene in 1965 through to mega-events such as Live Aid in 1985. His untimely death in a helicopter crash in October 1991 robbed the rock world of one of its most colorful and beloved characters. Shortly thereafter, a free concert was staged in his foster home, San Francisco, featuring a lineup of the biggest names he had been associated with, in front of a crowd of 300,000. Some of rock's most popular acts — and hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents — turned up on Nov. 3, 1991 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to honor the life and legacy of concert promoter Bill Graham. Graham, killed Oct. 25 in a helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of his girlfriend Melissa Gold and their pilot Steve Kahn, was a towering figure in the music industry. That was particularly so in and around San Francisco, where he'd built his concert promotion empire while nurturing a slew of artists that included Carlos Santana, Journey, the Grateful Dead and Crosby Stills Nash & Young — all of whom were part of the incredible bill lined up for a free event dubbed the Bill Graham Memorial: Laughter, Love And Music. The fact that Journey and CSNY were there spoke volumes. The former group hadn't played together since concluding their tour in support of 1986's Raised On Radio, and the latter hadn't performed with on-and-off member Neil Young since reuniting to make 1988's American Dream LP. But like the other artists assembled that day, they owed Graham too much to let personal differences keep them from the stage. A reported crowd of 300,000 was on hand to witness the show, which ran roughly five and a half hours and also included performances from Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, Joe Satriani, John Fogerty and Living Colour. Looking back, it's still somewhat remarkable that it came together the way it did — and yet, given that was a Bill Graham Presents production paying tribute to the man himself, not so surprising at all.
