Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were a folk-oriented rock band that reached number one in the charts with their debut album and enjoyed worldwide success. The band is considered to be one of the most influential formations in rock history. Main characteristics are polyphonic vocal harmonies and political lyrics. MAN IN THE MIRROR contains the complete, legendary 1970 concert that was recorded by the US broadcaster KSAN-FM. This record comes from a night at the Fillmore East, NY. It is interesting (especially for the fans) because it is a full concert in its entirety while '4 Way Street' is basically a "best of" the live 1970 tour of CSNY with the songs taken from various locations. There are 8 songs that are not on the expanded edition of the official live recording and so this is another good thing. It is a mono recording, and the sound is excellent in the acoustic set (the first CD) and good in the electric set (almost all the second CD) where unfortunately the solo guitars of Young and Stills are not always in the front of the sonic scene. Also we have all the banters and chatting between the four musicians (and lot of tuning of the instruments, especially the guitars!) and so the listener has almost the impression to be there in the audience. Unfortunately there are a couple of drawbacks. The last song of the acoustic set (Stills' s Love the one you're with) it is at the end of the second CD, that is after the electric set! (probably due to space limits in the first CD). Moreover, after every song there is a slight pause of silence (more or less one second duration ) probably because there was some talking from the radio broadcaster. On a lot of songs the pause is when the artists are talking or announcing the next song, but on some songs the break is when the song is already begun. So you can hear the first notes of the song on a track then there is the pause and then you can hear again the same notes and the full song in the following track. Some songs already present on '4 Way Street', here are in better versions (for example Crosby's Triad and Young's Southern Man).

This is the fourth night of CSNY's legendary six-night run at the Fillmore East, from which the Four Way Street live album was compiled. This entire run of shows captures CSNY hot on the heels of success from the recently released Deja Vu album. This was also during the group's most prolific phase, as all four members were working on solo albums that would soon define them as individual artists. This night's recording of the acoustic set is missing the first three songs. With the exception of "49 Bye Byes" and the missing "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" opener, this acoustic set consists almost entirely of songs from the individual members' solo albums. Neil Young presents "Tell Me Why" from his third album and later performs a medley of three of his most popular songs. "Laughing" from Crosby's first album is heard in a stripped down form of just vocals and guitar. Both "Simple Man" and "Man In The Mirror" would soon surface on Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners LP, and Stills performs "Black Queen" and "Love The One Your With" from his first LP.
