PSYCHEDELIC PILL is the 32nd studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, released on October 30, 2012. It is the second collaboration between Young and Crazy Horse released in 2012 (the first being Americana) and their first original work together since the Greendale album and tour in 2003 and 2004. PSYCHEDELIC PILL pokes down pathways that have been hinted at before in this teaming, but never fully explored. New textures emerge in the music, new landscapes in the lyrics. In many ways, PSYCHEDELIC PILL rounds out an array of probing works with prominent autobiographical threads. Whether as a singer, a songwriter or a guitarist, Neil Young has been one of the most influential and important artists of the rock era. After stampeding all over America’s musical past with Americana just a few months ago, Crazy Horse remain unbridled for a double-album in which Young takes us on a trip through his own history. By his own admission, Young’s now completely sober and learning to write songs with this fresh perspective. He keeps focusing on his own anger, as on ''Born In Ontario'', where he’ll “pick up a pen, scribble on a page/Try to make sense of my inner rage”. Opener ''Driftin’ Back'' is like a self-therapy session in which Young and Crazy Horse lock into a tribal groove for half an hour, Big Chief Shakey throwing out various meditations, all the while returning to a central motif of blocking out his thoughts. Yet Young’s thoughts often seem to change with the wind; and, fittingly, PSYCHEDELIC PILL flits around to a couple broken by the bottle and drifting apart, to recall the Young’s first flushes of fame and the euphoria of hearing ''Like A Rolling Stone'' on the radio. At an hour-and-a-half, it’s a bit of an ask: cringe-worthy lyrical clangers get entangled with some truly thunderous guitar playing – particularly on the 16-minute ''Walk Like A Giant'', the final eight minutes of which are left for Young to give Old Black a pasting. If you’ve indulged Young’s five-decade career so far, however, you’ll doubtless be psyched for this next ragged instalment. What a project! If you like Crazy Horse and the wildness they bring out in Neil, you hafta have this!

As it turns out, the lumbering Americana was merely an amateurish rehearsal for the reuniting Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Just a handful of months after that collection of schoolhouse folk tunes, the band released the mammoth PSYCHEDELIC PILL, Neil's first-ever studio double-LP. It's not just the album itself that sprawls: Young rides Crazy Horse through long, long songs, kicking off the proceedings with the 27-minute "Driftin' Back," a song that makes the nearly 17-minute "Ramada Inn" and 16:30 "Walk Like A Giant" look comparatively svelte. Instead, this is the sound of a veteran band settling into their familiar frayed clothes, doing precisely what they do best and nothing more. An air of tempered nostalgia permeates the album, evident not only in the unapologetic '70s grind of the band but in Young's lyrics, which fuzzily rhapsodize about "Drifting Back" and the first time he heard "Like A Rolling Stone." Unlike Dylan Young sounds like a defiant old coot pining for his past, which makes PSYCHEDELIC PILL yet another oddity in a catalog filled with them: it's noise rock as comfort food.
