ROAD ROCK Vol.1: FRIENDS & RELATIVES is a live album released in December 5, 2000 by Canadian / American musician Neil Young. The "friends and relatives" include Ben Keith, Chrissie Hynde, Duck Dunn, Young's then wife, Pegi, and his sister, Astrid. The album features an unreleased song, "Fool For Your Love", which dates from Young's This Note's For You period and a Bob Dylan cover, "All Along The Watchtower". Recorded live during Neil Young's recently concluded tour, ROAD ROCK Vol.1 presents one of rock's most influential and enduring singer-songwriters at his very best. From an overpowering 18-minute version of "Cowgirl In The Sand" to the previously unreleased "Fool For Your Love," from a classic rendition of "Tonight's The Night" to a duet with Chrissie Hynde on "All Along The Watchtower," ROAD ROCK Vol.1 rocks and rules the road. This souvenir from Neil Young's Y2K Music In Head Tour shines brightest when it reaches what in a vinyl world would have been side two's opening cut: "Words" starts out as a reminder of the depth and genius of Young's Harvest album, and then grows, over the course of its 11 minutes, into a fractured waltz that shows just how nicely a bunch of good old boys and girls can breathe new life into classic rock. Instrumental demons Donald "Duck" Dunn, Spooner Oldham, Jim Keltner, and Ben Keith (along with the Young family backup singers, sister Astrid and wife Pegi) perform similar miracles on "Tonight's The Night," "Cowgirl In The Sand" (18 big minutes!), and a crowd-pleasing "All Along The Watchtower" featuring tour-mate Chrissie Hynde. The shorter cuts are less remarkable, from the previously unreleased "Fool For Your Love" to a draggy "Motorcycle Mama" that barely warrants its four minutes. But when Young and company crank it up on the open highway, rock doesn't get much better than this.

For some reason, Neil Young decided that his 2000 tour was particularly hot, so he decided to record a live album and rush release it by the end of the year. So, that explains the appearance of ROAD ROCK Vol.1: FRIENDS & RELATIVES, an eight-song collection recorded with an ensemble featuring Spooner Oldham on keyboards, Duck Dunn on bass, Jim Keltner on drums, and Astrid and Pegi Young on vocals - thereby explaining the "Friends & Relatives" subtitle. This band is pretty good, even supple, but this doesn't feel necessary at any time and suffers from indulgence. And it doesn't shy away from this indulgence, either, opening with an 18-minute "Cowgirl In The Sand" that only diehards could sit through. And, in a sense, that summarizes this album, since only diehards will thrill to an 11-minute "Words," a previously unreleased "Fool For Your Love," a ten-minute "Tonight's The Night," or an "All Along The Watchtower" featuring opener Chrissie Hynde on guitar. This isn't bad, but it's not really good, either, and as the third live album in one decade, it's not just anticlimatic, it's unnecessary even for diehards, who probably would find this more exciting as a bootleg than an official album.
