AMERICAN DREAM is the ninth album by the band Crosby, Stills & Nash, their fifth studio album and their second with Neil Young. Released in November 1, 1988 on Atlantic Records and has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It is the highest-selling album by Neil Young in the 1980s. The album is dedicated to Jan Crosby, Anne Stills, Susan Nash and Pegi Young. AMERICAN DREAM is more disappointing than bad. After years of waiting for Neil Young to rejoin Crosby, Stills & Nash this album didn't really come close to rivaling Deja Vu. The album isn't really that cohesive, and probably a little too long, but there are a handful of songs. Young also feels like a bit more of a bandmember this time around as he plays on every track and contributes harmonies on many as well which he didn't do much in Deja Vu. Young and Stills' material has the most presence on the album and its their pieces that stand out.

There are some excellent songs here, notably Young's "This Old House" and Crosby's "Compass," but the quartet didn't really jell on its first new studio album in 14 years. Certainly, expectations were so high that the album seemed much worse than it really was, and in retrospect it seems a workmanlike effort simply lacking the spark that made this group so much more than the sum of its parts.
