DEAR MR FANTASY: A CELEBRATION FOR JIM CAPALDI is a recording of a concert at the Roundhouse in Camden Town, London to pay tribute to the late Jim Capaldi, songwriter and drummer in Traffic and to raise money for his children's charity The Landmark Trust. Concert featured a wealth of high profile performers to perform their favorite Traffic and Jim Capaldi tracks in front of a sell out audience. The evening was hosted by broadcasting legend ''Whispering'' Bob Harris. Even many Traffic fans probably aren't familiar with the extensive solo career of the band's cofounder Jim Capaldi. Therefore, this multi-artist, live tribute to the late singer/songwriter/drummer will be a revelation to many who only know his work in conjunction with Steve Winwood. About half the songs are selections from the late Capaldi's many solo releases, several of them relatively obscure. Aside from the Traffic material, Jim Capaldi was best known for ballads such as the lovely "Lost Inside Your Love" (gracefully performed here by singer Stevie Lange) and the Eagles hit "Love Will Keep Us Alive," which closes the program on a melancholy note. Yet it's his bluesy midtempo rockers like "Whale Meat Again" (urged on by Simon Kirke), "Pearly Queen" (Paul Weller), and "Gifts Of Unknown Things" (Phil Capaldi sounding eerily like his brother) that resonate with the greatest intensity.
PERSONNEL: Mark Rivera (vocals, saxophone, flute, percussion); Ray Cooper (percussion); Simon Kirke (vocals, drums, percussion); Andy Newmark (drums, percussion); Pete Bonas (guitar); Paul Wickens (keyboards); Dave Bronze (bass); Paul Weller (lead vocals, guitar); Stevie Lange (lead vocals); Joe Walsh (lead vocals, guitar); Dennis Locorriere (lead vocals, harmonica); The Storys (backing vocals); Yusuf Islam (lead vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Winwood (lead vocals, Hammond organ, guitar); Gary Moore (lead vocals, guitar); Jon Lord (Hammond organ); Phil Capaldi (lead vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Margo Buchanan (lead vocals); Pete Townshend (lead vocals, acoustic guitar).
Did anybody know that Traffic was planning to regroup and tour!? This fact alone makes the new double CD concert DEAR MR FANTASY: A CELEBRATION FOR JIM CAPALDI the more poignant in its release. One really can’t go wrong here with a backing band like this or the guest list, so you get pretty much what you’d expect: great songs being played and sung by great players. Good thing this CD features some solid rock percussion in case we forget how great a drummer and percussionist Jim Capaldi was. He was a superb drummer, but the other thing about Jim was that he was also a tremendous percussionist. In fact, Jim was a total percussionist, which included playing drums. The CD booklet is pretty complete with some great pics of Jim Capaldi, a “Traffic” bio, tribute pieces, and information about who played on each song. Of the twenty songs featured, none are duds, yet don’t really stand out beyond the fact that they are well played, performed on a special night, for a great musician and friend, with the profits going to a great cause. Capaldi died of stomach cancer in 2005, but his wife is keeping alive his music and legacy. The profits from the concert which this CD is taken from went to the Jubilee Action Street Children’s Appeal, an organization Jim and his wife were very much involved in. But DEAR MR FANTASY: A CELEBRATION FOR JIM CAPALDI isn’t an advertisement for the many causes Capaldi championed. It’s more a solid testament to a great musician who wrote and played on some great songs, and left this world way too early.
