BEYOND THE NOTES is a studio album by former Deep Purple keyboard player Jon Lord, released on 27th September 2004. Jon Lord is addicted to harmony. Leaving Deep Purple meant leaving his best friends and a life that's ''a bubble, a support system'', as he himself puts it. But putting an end to compromises did a world of good to keyboarder and composer Jon Lord. His album BEYOND THE NOTES is the best proof of this. A free spirit blows through the ten tracks of the album. Pavanes and pop songs are peopled by musicians from drummer to violinist, from a rock band to members of a string orchestra. Oriental rhythms pushing classical melodies forward. Organist Jon Lord supposedly left Deep Purple to retire and take it easy, after he'd spent much of his life recording and touring the world with Deep Purple and other artists. His exit provided Jon Lord with the opportunity to pursue some unexpected musical avenues, as the BEYOND THE NOTES album sees a detour into soothing classical music. Gone is the blaring guitar through Marshall stacks and Jon Lord's overdriven Hammond organ rocking back and forth - in its place is the jazzy sound of "Cologne Again" a lovely piano ballad, and the string-heavy album closer, "Music For Miriam." While it's not unheard of for a rock musician to take the orchestral plunge, BEYOND THE NOTES is one of the few instances where it works surprisingly well and doesn't come off as a mere detour.

Oh, these restless old men, whose names are the era. It seems that there were glory days in Deep Purple, wonderful solo albums of the 1970s, rightfully included in the golden fund of symphonic rock. And you can retire with a clear conscience, quietly and peacefully mow the English lawn in your garden and rest on your laurels, occasionally indulging in blissful memories... Whatever! The famous organist was full of creative ideas, as evidenced by this album. Ten beautiful symphonic compositions, recorded with the support of the accompanying band and the Norwegian orchestra Trondheim Soloists. Only three things are conventionally marked by the energy of game rock: the romantic “Miles Away”, where the flute part is led by the Dutch mastermind focus Thijs Van Leer; the magnificent “Cologne Again”, which evoked associations with Groovector; driving symphonic-folk “The Telemann Experiment”. Three more compositions are orchestral ballads, where the vocalists are famous people: Sam Brown with her unique hoarse-aspirated style of singing, Frida from the legendary Swedish four ABBA, who returned to music after a seventeen-year break. But the best performer was bluesman Miller Anderson, whose voice fit perfectly into the lyrical “November Calls.” Of the remaining four numbers, three are dedications: the touching “I’ll Send You Postcard” - to the memory of Tony Ashton, Jon Lord’s friend and colleague, “A Smile When I Shook His Hand” - for George Harrison and “Music For Miriam” - pure symphonic a classic addressed to the maestro’s mother. In most cases, Jon Lord uses a piano instead of the usual Hammond, but somehow you don’t remember this. BEYOND THE NOTES - an amazingly harmonious creation of the Master, giving the soul much-needed rest.
