Recorded in 2016 in Birmingham during Ritchie Blackmore's highly anticipated return to performing rock music. The show features a mix of Rainbow and Deep Purple classics. For the past couple of decades, legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has been focusing on his folk-oriented project Blackmore's Night. But 2016 year, he put together a lineup of Rainbow to perform two shows in Germany and one in England. The German shows were released as Memories In Rock: Live In Germany. Now, a double CD of the British show is being unveiled. LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM 2016 was released on 9th June 2017 via Eagle Rock Entertainment. The setlist for the concert at Genting Arena in Birmingham includes classics from Rainbow such as "Man On The Silver Mountain", "Since You've Been Gone" and "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" along with iconic Deep Purple tracks like "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water". The double CD set has performances of "Burn" and "Soldier Of Fortune" from Deep Purple's Mark III era that were not in the German shows. Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow’s June 2016 Tour was a short-lived jaunt of just six shows, only one of which was performed in England: this concert at the Genting Arena at Birmingham’s NEC. As such, LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM 2016 gives fans who weren’t there the opportunity to find out exactly what they missed, and will see the group’s triumphant return at the Genting Arena.

Now the complete 2016 Tour has been released on CD, this being the third, and final, date by last summer's reactivated Rainbow, with newcomer Ronnie Romero behind the mic. Much like the earlier issued dual disc compilation, culled from the pair of June festival appearances, in Germany, these two CDs rely heavily on the Dio era of the band, as well as other Blackmore classics. Only an abbreviated “Since You've Been Gone” comes from the Graham Bonnet days and “Spotlight Kid” from Joe Lynn Turner's tenure. Back home in England, meant an even greater emphasis on Deep Purple, including “Solider Of Fortune” and “Burn”. There's precious little, in the way of visuals, accompanying the Birmingham show: just four live photos, one with Candice Night barely visible in the background. The only other “known” player in the band was keyboardist Jens Johansson. Strange to hear a “new” voice handle tracks you've been listening to for 35+ years. That said, “Highway Star” is an energetic start. “Mistreated” gives both the Man in Black and new boy Romero the opportunity to strut their stuff. Granted Blackmore is now a generation older, but the fire inherent in some of the originals is now reduced to merely perfunctory. In fact, the new singer is better adapted to the slower Coverdale and Gillan material, but few could ever hold a candle to the late great Ronnie James Dio. After an acoustic run-through, “Soldier Of Fortune” proves to be Romero's calling card, the crowd adding their voices along the way. The instrumental “Difficult To Cure” gives the band a chance to jam, including a drum solo, bass and keyboard spotlights. Let’s hope Blackmore finds the desire to continue with the electric guitar. Perhaps Blackmore will return to America. If not for passion’s sake maybe he will make some poor business decisions that will force him back on the rock ‘n’ roll stage for the almighty dollar/pound! As fans…we’ll take whatever we can get!
