Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow- STRANGER IN US ALL- 1995- RCA Records/BMG Entertainment- 743213033723- 400 grn
STRANGER IN US ALL is the eighth and most recent studio album by the British hard rock band Rainbow, released on 21st August 1995. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore put together a new line-up of members of little-known musicians in 1994. The album was originally intended to be his solo album, but due to pressures from BMG, it was billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, making STRANGER IN US ALL the band's first studio album in twelve years. As Blackmore decided to pursue different musical styles, this was his final recording as a rock artist for two decades. The album takes its name from a line in the song "Black Masquerade". Released in the post-grunge mid-1990s, STRANGER IN US ALL failed to measure up to the critical and commercial acclaim of previous releases and was not particularly well publicized. However, it achieved a modest success, particularly in Europe and Japan. This album is for us like a walk on the yellow brick road. As if leaving us with nostalgic hints from Ritchie's previous and amazing works, with quite a few tracks corresponding with his works from the past. For example, the song "Silence" includes a melody that in some parts reminds us of "You Fool No One" from the album Burn, and the song "Ariel" brings up oriental scents that longingly remind us of the immortal "Stargazer", the melody in the track "Too Late For Tears" reminded us of "Can't Happen Here" written by Roger Glover and Ritchie Blackmore in the days of Difficult to Cure and the song "Black Masquerade" reminded us in its dynamics of Deep Purple's song "Anya".
PERSONNEL: Doogie White - lead and backing vocals; Ritchie Blackmore - guitar; Greg Smith - bass, backing vocals; Paul Morris - keyboards; John O'Reilly - drums; Candice Night - backing vocals; Mitch Weiss - harmonica.
The new lineup technically named Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was not an all-star who's who of hard rock like the groundbreaking original version with vocalist Ronnie James Dio or the radio-targeted version with vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. All incarnations of Rainbow, even the mid-period lineup fronted by bellower Graham Bonnet, are generally revered in hard rock circles. In its own way, Rainbow's music was just as influential as the music Blackmore made during his years in Deep Purple. STRANGER IN US ALL feels like Blackmore's shot-in-the-dark, semi-inspired effort to reconnect with his hard rock fan base. Around this same time, he was gearing up his Renaissance-flavored new age project Blackmore's Night. Many songs, such as "Wolf To The Moon," "Cold Hearted Woman," and "Stand And Fight," are decent enough. The two standout tracks, "Hunting Humans (Insatiable)" and "Black Masquerade," are the best at recapturing classic Rainbow's energy, drama, and dynamics. Blackmore also proffers another cover of the Yardbirds' "Still I'm Sad." He clearly loves this song since it has appeared in studio and live versions on previous Rainbow albums. Does STRANGER IN US ALL live up to the Rainbow name and reputation? Not really. Doogie White is a decent, fully capable hard rock vocalist, but he is not as distinctive as Dio, Bonnet, or Turner. Then again, few vocalists are. And what about Ritchie Blackmore? Blackmore is just amazing !!! Rainbow soon fell by the wayside as Ritchie concentrated on Blackmore's Night project. How unfortunate that this album was Blackmore's last sign of life in rock music for over two decades. In 1997 he and his partner set up the folk-renaissance project Blackmore's Night and replaced the electric Stratocaster with an acoustic guitar.
