The RAINBOW REMASTERS Series.
FINYL VINYL is a collection of live recordings and B-sides by the British hard rock band Rainbow and was released in March 1986, after the band had already disbanded in 1984. The cover photograph of Ritchie Blackmore was taken after a concert at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin in November 1982. The person all the way in the background is Don Airey running towards the stage trying to get in the shot as told by Don Airey himself in 2005. The first CD issue, a single disc, omitted both "Street Of Dreams" and "Tearin' Out My Heart". These were restored on the 2CD remastered edition of 1999, which features different lengths for several tracks along with the original artwork. Ritchie Blackmore decided to pull the plug on Rainbow following the supporting tour for 1983's Bent Out Of Shape. To commemorate the end of the band, he released FINYL VINYL, a double-record set primarily culled from the Joe Lynn Turner era but also featuring selections with Ronnie James Dio and Graham Bonnet, FINYL VINYL offers a haphazard alternate history designed for hardcore fans. Rainbow always sounded better on stage than they did on the studio and songs that sounded half-baked in the studio sound right here. That's not to say that it's a perfect album - the outtakes are interesting, but not particularly remarkable, the sequencing doesn't make sense and Blackmore's classical pretentions become even harder to stomach when married with a full-fledged orchestra - but it rocks harder and more convincingly than many latter-day Rainbow releases. That doesn't mean that it's preferable to the studio albums, but for the devoted, it's a welcome addition to the band's canon and it's a nice way to close a career.
PERSONNEL: Ritchie Blackmore - Guitar; Ronnie James Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, Graham Bonnet - Vocals; Roger Glover, Bob Daisley - Bass; Chuck Burgi, Bobby Rondinelli, Cozy Powell - Drums; David Rosenthal, Don Airey, David Stone - Keyboards; Lynn Robinson, Dee Beale - Backing vocals.
This is the band’s last album. It is a pretty interesting selection of songs. Joe Lynn Turner is amazing as always. The album features Roger Glover on bass on most of the tracks, prior to the big reboot of Deep Purple with Perdect Stranger. This album is no disappointment. This is a compilation of various concerts performed in the span of seven years from 1978 to 1984 at various places, plus one studio recording which was previously unreleased. The first four tracks "Spotlight Kid", "I Surrender", "Miss Mistreated" and "Street Of Dreams" were taken from the band's performance at The Tokyo Budokan, 1984 with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. "Difficult To Cure" is truly a great instrumental, performed wonderfully with an orchestra conducted by Mr. Takashi Hiroi at The Tokyo Budokan, 1984. You can find great guitar work by Ritchie in his best performance. You enjoy this 10 minute instrumental performance. The next two tracks "Stone Cold" and "Power" are Rainbow's performances at The Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas, 1982. The following two classic tracks "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" were performed under Ronnie James Dio. It's good to have this live version of these two classic tracks because Dio sung differently from the studio version and Ritchie guitar solo is so powerful -especially after the blues part. The concluding track "Weiss Heim" is another excellent instrumental. For those who love Rainbow or Deep Purple, this is a good collection of various live performances of Ritchie's band with various lineups. The recording quality is not that good but it's okay if you love Rainbow. Keep on rockin' ..!
