GREEN BULLFROG is a blues album recorded by an ad hoc band and produced by Derek Lawrence. The bulk of the album was recorded over two sessions at De Lane Lea Studios, London in 1970, with later string and brass overdubs. It was originally released on 19th March 1971, with reissues in 1980, 1991 and 2017. The album listed pseudonyms in the credits for contractual reasons and was commercially unsuccessful. The musicians were eventually confirmed as including Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice, Procol Harum's Matthew Fisher, Chas & Dave's Chas Hodges and session guitarists Albert Lee and Big Jim Sullivan. Strange release that's gotten a surprising amount of attention over the years. Not for being particularly good, or enjoyable, but primarily for the fact Ritchie Blackmore was involved in the project. For his part, Blackmore's never been particularly kind to the release, but don't let that stop you from checking it out. This is digitally remastered and expanded edition. GREEN BULLFROG was an album resulting from a one-off studio project and recorded between February and May 1970. A lot has been written about who appeared on the Green Bullfrog album - particularly which members of Deep Purple played. This CD not only gives the definitive answers, but presents a fabulous remastering: the original mixes and bonus tracks. What more could you ask for? For those of you unfamiliar with the GREEN BULLFROG thing, it's a guitar-hero album of reasonably familiar covers that comes from a couple of informal sessions in 1970. Originally released in 1971 with almost no publicity and with no reference to the artists' real names it sank without trace. Later of course, it became much sought-after and surrounded by rumor and mythology - often not helped by the vague and only partially accurate press recollections of key players. This is official version.

Now, really truth story. Music collecting is a funny old business and sometimes you get hold of something that remains totally unique and unequalled with a feel that is just never replicated anywhere. Thats the way with GREEN BULLFROG. A bunch of top quality musicians just having a blast and a party whilst someone happened to be taping it. Of course its not really as simple as that and GREEN BULLFROG was initially supposed to be a money making project just like any other recording. As producer and man behind the project Derek Lawrence said himself "... it was always intended to be released ... I wasn't into spending five grand just to entertain myself". In fact the whole secrecy thing surrounding the albums existence is a bit of a myth really as the music press at the time published stories and photos of the recording sessions with proper names and everything. Beat Instrumental Journal even did a feature on the project and eventually reviewed the album when it came out although they failed to connect it to their own previous story. This was quite possibly due to the fact that for contractual reasons the actual album cover ended up using pseudonyms. Although why people never put two and two together or kept their eyes open for it at the time can't begin to fathom. Some of the press reports even included the projected release date so there is not really much of an excuse !!
