The setlist, combining classic tracks from both Deep Purple and Rainbow, was exactly what the fans had wished for. The band played superbly and Ritchie Blackmore proved that he remains one of the finest guitarists of all time. Hell hath froze over! The set is pretty damn impressive and includes “Catch The Rainbow”, “Mistreated”, “Since You Been Gone”, “Black Night”, “Spotlight Kid”, “Smoke On The Water”, “Stargazer”, “Perfect Strangers”, and more. This is like Deep Purple and Rainbow all in one. Also contains a four-song bonus, that were recorded at an alternative concert. The entire show is a throwback to when rock concerts were more about substance than flash. These are real musicians all playing real music. Blackmore plays his ass off. The band was amazing, and at age 71, Ritchie Blackmore proved that he remains one of the finest guitarists of all time. While there are no other Rainbow members from yesteryear, this collection can just add on to the list of ten thousand or so Rainbow members Blackmore has seen come and go.

Ritchie Blackmore‘s Rainbow circa 2016 doesn’t feature any of the familiar names that have graced the history of the band. Blackmore raised many eyebrows when he revealed the cast of characters that would perform the string of European dates. MEMORIES IN ROCK: LIVE IN GERMANY is Rainbow with some Deep Purple. Enjoy the inclusion of Deep Purple classics “Perfect Strangers,” “Black Night” and “Mistreated” which are spectacular. Featured prominently are Rainbow staples “Since You Been Gone,” “Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Catch The Rainbow,” “Stargazer,” and “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll.” All eyes and ears were on Ronnie Romero and he does the Dio era Rainbow extremely well. This poor fellow had to sing tunes from the Blackmore back catalog that featured four pretty damn good lead vocalists. Ronnie Romero is by no means Ronnie James Dio. That begin said, he doesn’t try to be which makes you respect the guy that much more. He’s clearly influenced by Dio though he’s not trying to mimic him. Romero’s presumably Spanish accent adds a little flavor to his delivery of the songs. MEMORIES IN ROCK: LIVE IN GERMANY doesn’t knock it out of the park. This is fun show shot at a cool venue that demonstrates old dogs don’t need new tricks when they have songs like this. Crank it up! Now… how do we talk the Man in Black into a new studio release from Rainbow?
