Ronnie Wood- NOT FOR BEGINNERS- CD- 2001- Steamhammer/SPV GmbH.- 4001617727621- 400 grn
NOT FOR BEGINNERS is the sixth solo album by Ronnie Wood released on 19th November 2001. NOT FOR BEGINNERS features Ronnie Wood’s artwork on the front cover. Written and produced by Ronnie, it is comprised of ten original Wood compositions and three covers including Dylan’s ‘'King Of Kings'’, which features the great man himself on guitar. Also present are Wood’s long term collaborators Ian McLagan and bassist Willie Weeks, plus world-renowned drummer D.J. Fontana, Stereophonics vocalist Kelly Jones, Ronnie’s son Jesse on guitar, and daughter Leah on vocals. Very underrated and understated album by Ronnie Wood. The strength of this album lies in it's subtlety and sketchy feel. Several of the songs come off as demos almost. By all accounts Ron Wood is sober here, so it is kind of a lowkey affair with relatively few guests. These are some of the best, introspective lyrics he has written.
PERSONNEL: Ronnie Wood – vocals, guitar; Mark Wells – guitar, bass, drums, vocals; Jesse Wood, Scotty Moore, Bob Dylan – guitar; Willie Weeks – bass; Ian Jenning – double bass; Mick Jones – guitar, keyboards; Ian McLagan – piano; Andy Newmark, D.J. Fontana – drums; Martin Wright – drums, percussion, vocals; Leah Wood, Kelly Jones – vocals.
At this point, Ronnie Wood hadn't made a solo album in nearly a decade. NOT FOR BEGINNERS made the case of a much longer wait. There were too few non-instrumental originals, too many outside collaborators and too few songs that rose above the project's central pub-rock pretensions. Bob Dylan stops by for a croaky, though surprisingly effective, duet, but then so do Wood's kids. Ronnie has found support from his own family. Son Jesse can be heard playing guitar on six of the thirteen songs. On his first solo album in nearly a decade, Ron Wood recruits some of his friends, acquaintances, and former co-workers for a throwaway disc of studio rave-ups and questionably chosen covers. Ian McLagan, Andy Newmark, Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, and most notably, Bob Dylan lend rhythm, voices, and more to Wood's own instrumental leads and scratchy vocals. Unfortunately, the lineup is just about the only thing that's surprising or even good about the album. NOT FOR BEGINNERS actually sound like a record made by a guy who makes tons of money playing in one of the world's most legendary bands. First things first: This CD is very relaxed! Almost only ballads, hardly any loud guitars, very laidback. The disc is called NOT FOR BEGINNERS and in fact it is not suitable to get you going for Saturday night. Well, what can you say? Ronnie's "new one" certainly doesn't come close to Slide On This from 1992. Not a bad album, but rather something for quieter hours and not for beginners!
