CROSSEYED HEART is the third solo album by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Released on 18th September 2015, it is Richards' first studio album in 23 years since Main Offender. As with his first two albums, it was recorded with his band the X-Pensive Winos. The first single from the album, "Trouble", was released on 17th July 2015, prior to the album's release. Album contains exactly what one might hope for. There are beautifully played old blues songs, storming Stonesy rockers, a sublime Gregory Isaacs reggae cover and outlaw songs about evading the authorities. There’s dry humour in a touching lament about, ahem, the theft of a “stash” in ''Robbed Blind'' and the jerkily funny ''Amnesia'', about the 2006 incident in which he fell out of a tree. Contrarily, there are also several beautiful, heartfelt ballads. Richards’ fag-soaked voice isn’t as conventionally strong as Mick Jagger’s, but it is rich with character and knowing. The gorgeous ''Nothing On Me'' – about surviving whatever life throws at him – is as great a song as the 71-year-old has put his name to in decades. A terrific album, worthy of one of rock’s founding fathers.

Keith Richards took his time to complete CROSSEYED HEART. But Richards hasn't exactly been quiet in all those years. He helped Mick Jagger flesh out the leftover demos for expanded editions of Exile On Main St. and Some Girls and toured with The Stones on various anniversaries, but the feather in his cap was Life, the 2010 memoir that established Keith as a razor-sharp raconteur for the masses. CROSSEYED HEART arrived a mere five years later. And certainly, CROSSEYED HEART hardly feels like it was labored over. It sounds like it was knocked out in a week, which is about the highest compliment that can be paid to a record as casual as this. Bookended by acoustic numbers the album does indeed bear the suggestion of a construction, a record that slides from obsession to obsession without calling attention to transitions. Nothing here is surprising, not the overdriven Chess boogie of "Blues In The Morning" or the ska shuffle of "Love Overdue," but that familiarity is an asset, because Keith luxuriates in his detours so much he winds up synthesizing his affections into a signature, a move highlighted by the soulful crawl of the Norah Jones duet "Illusion," a song where both singers seem seduced by the slow groove. But that's the appeal of CROSSEYED HEART: it's a winningly low-key record, where the atmosphere matters more than the songs, yet Richards doesn't neglect writing tunes this time around.
