The title of this 3 disc CD collection says it all really, don't expect The Stones as The Stones, in this set you'll get some what are pretty rare tracks featuring what the individual members (past, present and almost) of the band have made or guested on over the years. There is a very good in depth set of sleeve notes explaining just who was were, with who and when. The other 2 CD's are tracks featuring songs and artists that have influenced The Stones over the years. A bit of a loose collection really but that said anyone with an interest in The Rolling Stones will find it interesting and good value. The Music Brokers guys who put these Many Faces compilations together had to go pretty far afield to find these "odds and sods". The first disc ranges from Leslie West with Mick Jagger playing a slightly altered "Brown Sugar" rhythm on guitar from the Great Fatsby album, to Johnny Winter's "Jumping Jack Flash" from his 1971 live album . In between are scattered efforts by Ian McLagan, Kenny Jones (both with Ron Wood as the tie-in to the Stones), two cuts from Bill Wyman solo (sounding a bit Ringo-ish), a really strange one-off by John Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas, some reggae by Toots And The Maytals, a cover by Chris Farlowe etc. Most of these cuts are good- timey rock and roll with a touch of Stones' swagger, but nothing to write home about. Second disc is a rundown of some of Mick and Keith's favorite old tunes by blues and rhythm and blues artists. Third disc consists of original versions of songs that The Stones covered. Chances are that most hardcore fans will be fully familiar with all of them. There are some really powerful performances of seminal stuff, for those that aren't familiar.... and a wordless version of Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain", which puzzling. First disc could just as well be called Sucking In The Seventies, because it just shows how much mediocre stuff came out of the middle of that decade. But, for some people it might jar some pleasant memories. The other two discs can't be knocked for the material. This is a marvelous project that with remastered sound, beautiful cover art extended liner notes is an essential addition to your collection.
