SuperHeavy- SUPERHEAVY- CD- 2011-
- A&M Records/SuperHeavy LLC/Universal International Music BV- 602527788685- 400 grn
SUPERHEAVY is the only album by the rock supergroup SuperHeavy. It was released on 16th September 2011 by A&M Records. SUPERHEAVY was a one-off supergroup project consisting of Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, A. R. Rahman, and Damian Marley. Joss Stone and Dave Stewart have collaborated in the past with Mick Jagger. Mick Jagger wanted SUPERHEAVY to showcase different musical styles, with music ranging from reggae to ballads to Indian music. The SuperHeavy project began in 2009. In early 2009, Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A. R. Rahman experimented at a studio in Los Angeles, trying to "write songs which had meaning". They had a couple more sessions after that trying to perfect every song that was written. Mick Jagger stated in an interview that "they had entered with just ideas, a few guitar riffs and a few snippets of lyrics... which isn't his usual style of working, but music evolved quickly." The band recorded 29 songs in 10 days. Some of the songs recorded were even an hour long. In total, there was more than 35 hours of music recorded, from which Stewart and his engineer found the highlights that would work as the roots of songs. However, the standard version of the album only included 12 songs.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger – vocals, guitar, harmonica; Damian Marley – vocals, programming; Joss Stone – vocals; A. R. Rahman – vocals, piano, synthesizers, continuum fingerboard, drum programming; Dave Stewart – lead guitar.
All supergroups contain a member or two whose stardom outshines the rest and so it is with SuperHeavy, a motley amalgamation fronted by Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, and Damian Marley and also featuring Eurythmic Dave Stewart and Indian film composer A.R. Rahman. Unquestionably Mick Jagger’s star shines brightest but he’s not the center of this universe, nor is Joss Stone, the only member who has been a constant presence in international pop charts over the past decade. No, the creative director here is Dave Stewart, who was suddenly seized by the possibilities of a pancultural purported pop, enthused to his friend Mick Jagger and brought him on board, then filled out the group with totems of different cultures: Bob Marley representing Jamaica, Rahman Bollywood, Joss Stone the new breed. Mad scientist that he is, Dave Stewart takes pains to balance each voice because Common Ground is kind of the point of this venture - sounds from every corner of the world converge to create music intended to speak to every corner of the world. Such global thinking extends to the lyrics, where SuperHeavy endeavor to make sense of the world’s mess, to figure out “what the f*** is going on,” as Joss Stone sings on “I Can’t Take It No More.” By the time this tune pops up on SUPERHEAVY, many listeners may be asking themselves the same question due to SuperHeavy’s insistence on being everything to everyone. SuperHeavy certainly don’t lack for ambition but there’s a self-congratulatory insularity here that’s off-putting. They’re making music for themselves yet are convinced of its edifying properties. Perhaps if the album actually had some kineticism to its eclecticism, or at least a hook or a tune, it would earn its wannabe evangelism, but the untrammeled indulgence turns this into a gaudy multicolored circus.
