Ben Waters is one of the world's leading boogie woogie/rock `n' roll piano players. Still in his fourties, he has entertained all over the world, played alongside Chuck Berry, Shakin' Stevens and many other rock `n' roll legends. BOOGIE 4 STU: A TRIBUTE TO IAN STEWART is a tribute CD in memory of Ian Stewart founder of The Rolling Stones, who, along with Jools Holland and PJ Harvey have contributed to the album. This is hard-hitting authentic boogie and rock `n' roll at its best. Mixed by Glyn Johns with artwork by renowned British artist by Sir Peter Blake. In Life, his 2010 autobiography, Keith Richards makes clear that boogie-woogie pianist Ian Stewart was the organizing principle in The Rolling Stones, calling the first audition/rehearsal that led to the formation of the band, even though, when the group was offered a recording contract, he was shunted aside as an unnecessary sixth member who didn't look the part. But he stayed on as road manager and tinkled the ivories as the undisputable “sixth Stone” until 1985, the year of his passing. Ben Waters pays tribute to "Stu" on this album largely given over to boogie-woogie, and he has enlisted a star-filled set of guests including Stones members Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Ronnie Wood, as well as other notable musicians such as PJ Harvey and Jools Holland. While other keyboardists, notably Nicky Hopkins, would add their own spin to various Stones recordings, it was always Stewart on the road, weary of minor keys, but ready to boogie-woogie with the band. No doubt, he would have appreciated the sentiment of fellow boogie-woogie pianist Ben Waters, who spent a year putting BOOGIE 4 STU: A TRIBUTE TO IAN STEWART together.

According to the liner notes of this 11-track disc, Ben Waters, of the A, B, C & D Of Boogie Woogie, which also includes Charlie Watts, had wanted to make the record for years. Ian Stewart was an idol and Ben Waters simply wanted to thank him in a special and musical way. Adding to the integrity of the project, Ben Waters opted to donate proceeds from sales of the album to the British Heart Foundation. Once Watts signed on to play drums, other musicians expressed interest in being involved. Most had known Ian Stewart, and wanted to express their thanks in a more personal way. As it worked out, other members of The Rolling Stones, past and present, came aboard, transforming a simple tribute into a star-studded ballyhoo. As a complete package, BOOGIE 4 STU: A TRIBUTE TO IAN STEWART is an album with a lot of heart for a good cause. It doubles as a loving salute to one of rock’s greatest unsung heroes.
