Tom Waits finally made his commercial breakthrough with the release of Small Change in the Fall of 1976. Thereafter he assembled a band and toured widely. This superb live set dates from shortly after the release of Foreign Affairs in September 1977 and features material from it and its predecessor, as well as earlier classics. Performed at a new 850-seat venue in Boston and broadcast on WBCN-FM, it captures him at his best, in superb fidelity, and is presented here with background notes and images. You also get a couple tracks from Nighthawks At The Diner. Overall, he even plays an encore or two. The material awesome, and Waits live in the 70s. You can't lose. Very crooner, noir-comedy with inspiring tales of whimsicalness. Absolute heavenizing. This is an old radio broadcast akin to some of the Miles Davis live releases that have come out recently. Good stuff. Two encores, some songs you wouldn't know well, some you would, varyingly different in live form. The crowd is pretty into it and they have a good time, and Waits is his weird wonderful self. Good remastered live stuff from his seventies years. Of course this show was right after the release of Foreign Affairs. Wouldn't mind having something like this either a little bit before for Closing Time material or after for Blue Valentine. What would really be nice though is something from right after Swordfishtrombones or somewhere in the 80s. These remastered live/radio releases are great. Really felt that like had bought ticket and was right there. Tom Waits' crooner voice is really weird and every syllable is constrained, giving off a real mystical mystique. Very intimate.
