Just after the release of his classic album Small Change on October 5, 1977, Tom Waits played the Paradise Rock Club, an 850-capacity venue in Boston, Massachusetts that had only been open for three weeks. With a fedora on his head and a cigarette in hand, the 27-year-old crooner already sounded weather-worn on songs like ''The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)'' and ''Bad Liver And A Broken Heart''. The concert was recorded by Starfleet and broadcast live on its network of FM stations. Upright bass player on this tour, Danny Mann, is absent. This is an unusual trio configuration for the entire performance. Virtually flawless open reel master of the entire WBCN simulcast.
