California's own celebrated blues troubadour rolled into Mediasound Studios on a cold December night for a radio interview with host Vin Scelsa, accompanied only by Elektra records' rep Ralph Ebler. What transpired was an intimate session boasting material from Waits' already burgeoning repertoire. Waits' noteworthy recordings made at Mediasound on the 14th December 1976 were aired on the 18th by KNEW-FM on Scelsa's show, Idiot's Delight. Waits' trademark 'growl' was very much in evidence in the charged and more cynical atmosphere of his album Small Change, released just prior to this session. Klondike Production marks this landmark point in Waits' career with the KHEW-FM broadcast presented here in its entirety. In 1976, Tom Waits was promoting his fourth album, Small Change, when he popped into a New York recording studio with WNEW-FM radio host Vin Scelsa to do an interview and play a few songs. Waits was in a rare mood and delivered an intimate hourlong performance, in which he offered stripped-down but passionate versions of 11 of his songs, accompanied only by Ralph Elber on drums, as Waits added off-the-cuff lyrics on several songs and spun tall tales during the breaks. The performance became something of a collector's item among Waits fans lucky enough to record the radio broadcast of the session, and now the show has been released in full on the album Nighthawks on the Radio: Live. A fascinating document of Waits' early beatnik-influenced period, NIGHTHAWKS ON THE RADIO is a spare but compelling performance that also finds him discussing his creative process and delivering plenty of his characteristic dry humor. Vin Scelsa: ''This was a show I recorded with Tom in December of 1976 that was originally broadcast on WNEW during my first sojourn at the station. I played this rare one-hour tape tonight as my contribution to the station’s “From The Archives” weekend. Tom and I (and drummer Ralph Ebler) taped this at a studio in town – Tom at the piano, Ralph on snare and high-hat; it was unrehearsed, unscripted and totally cool! This is the first time the show has been aired in its entirety since the original broadcast almost 20 years ago''.
