Tom Waits- MY FATHER'S PLACE: 1977 Radio Broadcast- CD- 2013- Smokin’ Production- 823564633527- 300 grn
This superb live recording is from late 1977. Tom Waits is one of that very select breed of idiosyncratic mature singers whose vocals, though initially perhaps an acquired taste, soon become utterly compelling. Once heard, never forgotten, like Fred Neil, Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Dr. John or Marianne Faithfull for instance, often dividing opinion but those who get-it are rarely disappointed This superb live recording is from late 1977 and finds Tom holding court in fine style at legendary New York venue, My Father's Place. Despite its small capacity - circa 400 people this humble abode hosted shows by superstars like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bob Marley, The Ramones and U2 during the 16 years it was open for business (1971-1987). It was also a hugely popular recording location for Long Island s revered WLIR radio station, who broadcast the show across the airwaves. Tom Waits claimed that the first kind of music that inspired him was traditional Mexican ballads that he d hear on his father s car radio. His teenage years were spent during that most culturally groundbreaking and exciting decade, The Sixties. However, Waits own musical influences were not generally drawn from the then current explosion of pop or rock talent, instead he harked back to an earlier time, even citing crooners like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra as influential. He was also interested in the Blues (notably Louis Armstrong and Howlin Wolf) and hip Beat scene stalwarts like the comic poet Lord Buckley and iconic novelist Jack Kerouac. Having turned 21, Waits signed to Frank Zappa's Bizarre/Straight label and cut some demos (which remained unreleased until 1991). However, he moved to David Geffen and Elliot Roberts newly founded Asylum and his debut album, Closing Time, was released in 1973. It was not commercially successful, but was critically acclaimed and encouragingly well received by Tom s peers. Tim Buckley cut a version of ''Martha'' while, more lucratively, The Eagles covered ''Ol' 55''. The Heart Of Saturday Night followed in 1974, further cementing Waits hip credentials as a highly atmospheric neo-Nightclub crooner, often leading a laidback jazz band. Waits career was still building momentum and the next stage was the double live-in-the-studio album Nighthawks At The Diner (1975). It broke Tom into the Billboard 200 charts, and was his biggest selling album to date. From it, both ''Eggs And Sausage (In A Cadillac With Susan Michelson)'' and ''Emotional Weather Report'' appear here. Sense of pessimism was reflected in 1976's Small Change album, which is heavily featured in this live set. Here there are live versions of the stone-cold classic ''Tom Traubert's Blues'', together with booze-steeped renditions of ''Pasties And A G-String'', ''Invitation To The Blues'', ''Jitterbug Boy'', ''Step Right Up'', ''I Wish I Was In New Orleans'', ''The Piano Has Been Drinking'' and the title track. Foreign Affairs (released in September 1977) was the current album at the time of this performance. Featured herein are the medley ''Jack & Neal''/''California'', ''Here I Come'', ''Muriel'' and a solo version of ''I Never Talk To Strangers'' (originally sung as a duet with Bette Midler). Tom's backing band for this event was a slight variation on his regular touring collective, The Nocturnal Emissions. While Waits career and profile have continued to advance exponentially in the 37 years since this timeless show was performed, going back to hear Tom. The 12-track set is largely comprised of material from Waits' most recently released albums.
