Tom Waits- ROMEO BLEEDING: LIVE FROM AUSTIN- CD- 2009- Immortal/IMC Music Ltd.- 8712177054916- 300 grn
ROMEO BLEEDING: LIVE FROM AUSTIN is a live album by Tom Waits, first released in 2009 on Immortal/IMC Music Ltd. The album was recorded on December 5, 1978 in Austin, Texas. This album is not approved by the artist. This seems to be from the Blue Valentine tour. The sound is all right, but the songs and the performance are excellent! The key was the live version of "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis". This CD is a great addition to the collection. Waits, who sat behind a piano for most of the concert, was mainly backed by a small jazz trio. He chain smoked throughout the concert, and occasionally stepped out from behind his piano to tell these amazing stories about things like the infamous Chelsea Hotel in New York, and characters like a guy named "Small Change," who got rained on with his own thirty eight.
PERSONNEL: Tom Waits - vocals, piano; Herbert Hardesty - saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn; Arthur Richardson - guitar; John Thomassie - drums; Greg Cohen - bass guitar.
Taped in 1978, Waits and his band were in Austin to support the release of Blue Valentine. We get a first-hand look as Waits transforms from more jazz-based compositions to bluesy grunts. There’s also a Christmas carol, Tom Waits style, as the singer-songwriter treats the audience to “Silent Night / Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis.” Not a bad live album for a bootleg. Though it's kind of not a bootleg anymore since it is available to buy in stores and whatnot. It's rather neat, because Tom Waits does not play the same show he use to back in the late 70's, so it is nice to be able to hear what a show was like back then. This was recorded when Foreign Affair and Blue Valentines were new, so a majority of the material is from those albums. It was also during the height of his Beat Generation' days, so a lot of it is spoken word and he doesn't really sing the songs like he does on the albums. But it is still enjoyable. The instrumentation is classic jazzy blues Waits style. Overall, it is a pretty good listen and Tom Waits fans will most certainly want to check it out.
