BEAUTIFUL MALADIES: THE ISLAND YEARS is a Tom Waits compilation album, consisting of previously released songs from his years recording with Island Records, most notably from the albums Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Big Time and Franks Wild Years. The tracks were selected by Tom Waits. The album was released in 1998, but represents Waits's output from 1983 to 1993. 23 tracks taken from the seven albums Tom released on Island from 1983 to 1993, perhaps the most consistently interesting and challenging body of work by any solo artist of the period. Tom Waits pulled off a neat trick with the 1983 release of Swordfishtrombones: he disengaged himself from the present (and his own recent achievements) and allied himself with the past. And yet no one could accuse him of becoming mired in nostalgia. A decade before the phrase lo-fi gained favor, Waits purposely ravaged his songs by stomping them into peculiar shapes and utilizing arcane instruments and recording techniques to further bend them into new kinds of aural sculptures. The result was a genuine musical breakthrough. These pretty/ugly tracks provide a riveting view of Tom's wild years. While at least four Waits Island titles qualify as essentials, BEAUTIFUL MALADIES: THE ISLAND YEARS and the 1988 live set, Big Time, provide compact introductions to a matchless body of work. Tom Waits' brilliance is messy - he has so many ideas that sometimes unrealized songs are juxtaposed with moments of greatness on his albums. That may make for the occasional uneven record, but each album has its own distinct tone that makes it a unique listening experience, whether it's a masterpiece or a missed opportunity. And that's the reason why his work, especially his sprawling Island albums, doesn't lend itself to retrospectives like BEAUTIFUL MALADIES: THE ISLAND YEARS. On the surface, the collection looks promising. The single disc features 23 tracks from Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years, Big Time, Bone Machine, and The Black Rider, including such familiar and celebrated items as "Hang On St. Christopher," "Innocent When You Dream," "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," "16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought Six," and "Downtown Train." Some fans might spot missing favorites, but it's hard to fault the selections themselves - if it weren't for the fact that they all sound somewhat disjointed when separated from the original albums. Because of this, BEAUTIFUL MALADIES: THE ISLAND YEARS is a little odd - it's not a bad sampler, but it isn't necessarily a good introduction since the songs don't sound like they belong together. The curious may want this as a sampler, but if you wind up liking Waits, you won't be satisfied with anything other than the original albums.
