LIVE… IN THE HEART OF THE CITY is a live album by English rock band Whitesnake. Originally released on 3rd Novemrer 1980 as a double-vinyl album, and double-play cassette, it utilises recordings made in 1978 and 1980. The Classic Rock magazine in 2011 and 2023 placed it among the best live albums ever. Recordings made with The Rolling Stones Mobile Studio at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 23rd and 24th June 1980, during the band's 1980 is The Ready ‘N’ Willing World Tour. Recordings made at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 23rd November 1978 previously released in Japan in March 1980 as LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH. This show is fantastic even if it is only six tracks. It is old school Whitesnake when they were more a blues rock band then what came in the late 80’s, which wasn’t bad either. The guitar work of Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden were unmatched at the time and you throw in Jon Lord’s keyboard playing you get quite the powerhouse band. No one can touch Lord’s playing. And then Coverdale’s vocals were so fresh, yet gritty and bluesy and worked perfectly for this style. This is a showcase of greatness.

In North America, the album was released as a single record, excluding the live material from 1978. The first UK CD version was a double set, issued in 1988, in what is now known as a FAT-BOY double-CD case. LIVE… IN THE HEART OF THE CITY has since been remastered and was released in March 2007 as a 2CD set, featuring all the tracks of the original album. This is issue Japanese Limited Edition fifteen track digitally remastered 2CD album set comprising both versions of LIVE... together for the first time. It was released on 11th April 2007. The first of which was released In 1980 and recorded live at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1978 plus the second all-singing, all-dancing, long-player recorded live at Hammersmith Odeon in June 1980. Superbly presented in Mini LP-Style cardboard sleeve. The first and second disc together is in its own unique wraparound oversized OBI-Strip. Also includes inserts, english info booklet, and Japanese/English lyric booklet. It is a great live set that you'll be thoroughly enjoy. Short and sweet and captures some great moments. The band was really cooking at this time and they boiled over some fine work with this release. The first of many live albums to come with Whitesnake and this one started it off right. This one is a must grab if you find it out in the wild. Don’t let it slip past you.
