Whitesnake- THE EARLY YEARS- CD- 2004- EMI Records Ltd.- 724359201924- 400 grn
THE EARLY YEARS is a compilation album by English rock band Whitesnake, released on 23rd February 2004. The album's track listing was compiled by David Coverdale, spanning 1978's Trouble to 1984's Slide It In. As former frontman of Deep Purple, David Coverdale had a lot to prove with his new band, Whitesnake. The trouble is, history now only remembers Whitesnake as poodle-haired late 80s metallers. After all, that was the era that established them as an international success. Trouble was, it was all a bit silly. Big on hair and bombast they may have been, but they were also oddly hollow and soulless and one of the least original acts filling stadia at the time. A huge financial success they may have been, however they lacked any sort of credibility. It's difficult to think of Whitesnake having credibility, however that's where this compilation from their pre-hair-metal era comes into play. You see Whitesnake started out as a hairy-arsed hard gigging rock combo, with little blokes with names like Bernie playing guitar employed for their ability to play as a unified band, rather than how good they looked on camera. Even in the early years, Whitesnake weren't without their problems. Their lyrics have always been the worst kind of misogynistic bollocks, and that is often where people lose their rag with the band. The thing was, back in their early years, you really couldn't take anything away from them musically, they were just a tight rocking band, which is all they needed to be. Coverdale's vocals you'd call original, but on the live tracks here he demonstrates his strength as a frontman, connecting with the audience and being the focal point of the band on the live stage. Whitesnake. They weren't always ridiculous haired poseurs, but they were never any kind of lyrical genius either, but in their early days they were just a great rock band with questionable lyrics. Fair enough.

To most rock music fans in the U.S., Whitesnake is best known as a hair metal band that cranked out several hits and some steamy videos in the late '80s. But longtime fans know that the group was a bluesy, hard rockin' outfit during the early part of the decade. THE EARLY YEARS weighing in at 18 tracks, which were compiled by David Coverdale himself. But something that differentiates early Whitesnake from the "Still Of The Night" era is that the group was able to be bluesy, but was not as obviously derivative of Led Zeppelin, as evidenced by any of the selections here. For fans who prefer Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden over Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai, THE EARLY YEARS is a fine set of early Whitesnake highlights. All recordings have been digitally remastered, which makes listening even more enjoyable. The CD comes with a detailed booklet with pictures of the various line-ups. David Coverdale himself wrote the lyrics and tells a story or two about the albums or band members. Even if you own all of the albums mentioned above, the album is great fun, as it offers a journey back to a time more than forty years ago when the patch for the Ready An' Willing album, among other things, adorned many jackets, harmoniously alongside AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Rainbow or Judas Priest. All albums from this era are generally recommended, but since in many places things are tight and we are not all called Scrooge McDuck, THE EARLY YEARS will do for now. And once you've got a taste for it...
